Reply:Here's a question that I've always wanted to ask someone. How do you control the direction of a drill? I understand the length of the drill pipe will bend but how do you control/aim  it?.....Mike
Reply:the direction of the drill string is controlled by a locator in the drill head.  it gives depth and pitch so you make corrections at the machine.  what's in the picture here is used on the pull back to widen the hole. basically this goes in after the pilot bore is done.  When I used to work at Ditch Witch, our down hole tool department used to make several sizes of these reamers.  some used the mill tooth heads and others used tungsten carbide cutting heads.Salas Repair General Welding & Fabrication

Reply:mrmikeythese types of reamers will obviously ride the bottom of the hole because of weight.  These types of reamers are typically used in rock drilling situations.  No beacon to show direction because the pilot bore has already been made.  to make the pilot bore you need a beacon housing with a tapered bit.  the beacon housing followed by the drill string will poke out when the drilling path is taken.  after it pokes out of the ground, the beacon housing is then taken off and this beast is put on.  the size of the reamer dictates what size pipe casing will be pulled back attached to this reamer with a swivel.  the reamer enlarges the hole and the casing is pulled back as dead weight because the swivel only allows the reamer to turn.  I hope this makes sense.Salas Repair General Welding & Fabrication
