I have a small improvement I want to make for my truck but I'm stumped on how to do it. I'd like to make a pair of stainless steel fender welts or maybe polished aluminum if using stainless would be too hard. The fender welts are only the start of the overall improvement. I want to make a set of inner fender wells out of a heavy rubber so a fender welt seems like the ideal "thing" to fasten it with or to. Once I have the rubber fastened securely to the contour of the fender opening I'll make another fastening system to hold it up into the wheel well. The fasteners up in the well can be of lower aesthetic quality since they won't hardy be seen.  What I'm thinking in terms of a fender welt would look like a piece of 1.5"  flat bar (or around there) with a piece of round rod (1/8" maybe) welded along the outer edge to dress it up. If that is the best solution, then how thick of flat bar should I use and what diameter round rod? I think my next hangup will be my lack of a tig welder and tig experience (total sum of 0). I suspect welding something like that is too delicate for a mig unit (weldments too large to hide behind the round rod - with my skills any way ).With all that said, who knows the right way to do it Or where I could buy something that would work? Reply:I "think" what you are describing is called "wire beading". But I may be mistaken. The sheet metal edge is formed around a wire to give the bead shape. You may want to check out  this site: http://www.tinmantech.com/index.phpRex
