Hey guys,I am still in the early stages of making a work bench, I was considering using my table saw as a permanent solution but I would much rather have a larger space. The common setup seems to be 4 legs with some supports between them welded to a steel top, sometimes with wheels, some times not. That doesn't sound too bad to me sometimes, but I often end up hurting my knees on the legs every once in a while. What I am thinking of doing is welding 4 L brackets onto the bottom of a unknown sized rectangular steel table top, the brackets would have 3 holes in each one, then they would get really thick screws put through them and straight into the wall studs in my garage. Which would you rather have? Wheels or a open bottom space for a knee safe zone.Miller 330 a/bp water cooledI believe in gun control, I hold my gun with two hands. Reply:depends how heavy the work is and how hard you're gonna hit it. at a minimum i'd have gussets on the brackets.
Reply:An L-bracket that wouldn't bend under weight would have to be pretty beefy. I did two benches in my garage that fold down from the wall. One is for wood, one for heavier stuff. For the wood one, I had legs that come down at an angle from the leading edge of the bench, down to the wall line. It's not as strong a design as legs going straight down, but I've gotten up on top of it without any issue. It's also tied into the studs, and isn't going to hit your knees. The one I did out of steel has a simpler design, but is more stout.Jack OlsenMy garage website
Reply:Wow, awesome design. This is a picture of the space that I plan to put the bench. I am pretty certain I have decided to go with the stationary work bench. I have been shopping around my areas for places to buy metal from. I am looking to buy large amounts of aluminum and these guys https://www.metalsupermarkets.com/MSC-Home.aspx seem to have the best prices for what I am trying to get, they also have pretty good prices on steel. I know little about the alloys of aluminum and even less of the alloys of steel. I read some one elses thread about this same idea, the table top made of steel. They were thinking of using a36. I don't really know what that is, but I seem to be able to get a 3 foot by 5 foot piece for a good price.I plan to make L brackets of my own if I feel like I can, though something tells me that I likely don't have the capacity to bend steel as thick as I want to use. I just had an idea, I could take two pieces of steel that are of same length, width and thickness and weld them together as a joint weld. No bending needed. I was thinking of getting some steel tube to bend and fit along the L bracket for added strength but I imagine that that would be tremendous over kill.Miller 330 a/bp water cooledI believe in gun control, I hold my gun with two hands.
