My buddies and I have been in a debate for awhile now. We are all welding students in college. We came across chill plates that are used to weld on to draw the heat away. In the shop we actually weld on channels on top of 3/8 plate tables. which starts the question, Which cools faster when welding; A channel or a chill plate?
Reply:mass and surface area define the answer. Think block ice and chip ice.

Reply:If you want me to play this game you have to be more specific about what you call a chill plate. I am thinking of a block of perhaps 3/4 inch thick aluminum with drilled passages inside it which water is pumped through. Or maybe just a copper block or plate. What about the channel are we to assume it is steel and four inches wide? Either way if the contact area and distance beyond your specimen you weld on the plate and channel extends is similar I find it hard to understand why you need to ask.Last edited by fran...k.; 12-05-2011 at 09:10 AM.
Reply:okay lets say a 1/4" thick channel and 3/8" chill platei personally believe the channel is more effective because it leaves a gap between the table and the work causing a heat sink effect. but am i wrong?i am only comparing the chill plate to the channel, no other waysLast edited by Dmanthe1; 12-05-2011 at 12:42 PM.Reason: made a mistake and forgot to add a line

Reply:Confusing!! If you have any air gap the air insulates. The closer and larger the contact and the more conductive the material the more heat will be transferred.
Reply:If the channel and plate are the same dimensions I'll go with the channel,it has more surface area.tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
