hello all i havnt been around for a while but i have been welding alot more then normal. i was wondering what kind of pattern i should use to get good looking beads out of 6010,7024,7018, and 6011. i can only weld at our school shop since my mom and dad got a devorce so i dont have a welder anymore. i am right now just using a triangle type pattern and it has worked ok. also what is a good pattern for mig welding sheet metal ( my truck). thanks for your helpjosh
Reply:The triangle pattern is ok for the 60xx series, the 70xx series are more of a contact, drag rod..
Reply:ok thank you also what is a weeve and what is a stringer.
Reply:A stringer is a straight bead. Just move along at the right speed in a straight line.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:alright and if i do multiple stringers ontop of each other i have to de slag the first stringer first right. sorry if this is a dumb questionjosh
Reply:Yep. Slag is a protective covering on the weld as it is being done. It is full of impurities and old flux- garbage- that you dont want in your next pass. Get rid of it as best you can. Dont have to be perfect clean, a little bit is ok, but get as much as you can. Clean steel is best.....
Reply:ok and i can use a flap disk or a whire wheel to get it off and clean the metal right.

Reply:I use a twisted wire wheel and a twisted wire cup wheel on my 4.5" grinder. It removes 99% of the slag in less time than you can chip 50% with a hamer. the 70xx rods it is fairly critical to remove the slag but on 60xx rods you can cheat a little. Reply:I belive in forming good habits from the start. Put the rod straight onto the steel or into the joint and angle it back a little, play with it a little, some rods have a thick layer of slag that will be easily removed when welded right, lots of time 7018 or 7024 will have the slag pop right off, i can make 6013 pop off consistantly. 6010 and 6011 needs to be almost scraped off and its a good idea to wire brush or use a wire wheel. clean your passes to make sure its only steel being fused into steel. its a good habit. with the 6011/ 6010 they like to be lifted off the steel a littlebit while welding and a little weave to make the size of puddle you want.for mig welding sheet metal the best advice for you to get goin on it is to make tacks every couple of inches i mean fairly close, and then hammer the metal so there is no gaps between the tacks, and keep it cool, weld one stitch between 2 tacks then weld between two others away from the first one, hammer the sheet metal back down where it may have come up again, and keep going. if it gets too hot just leave it alone and let it cool down on its own. good luck with the truck, try to get some pics too!Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up. |
