To get under this lid    And people will eat them.Lid for a home made barbecue pit.6'-8" wide  3'-11" deep   1'-8" high.Pit is made of 8" block lined with fire brick and will get covered with rock eventually.Gotta stay late to finish it up tonight, it get's installed tomorrow morning and they start cooking tomorrow afternoon. For you Aussie's that's yesterday afternoon and right now Still have to add handles chimney and dampner and make the hinges which I'll weld on site.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]

Reply:hey i bet that will look pretty nice. looks better than a dented up barrel! ive always wanted to build a grill from a keg of beer. thought that would be cool.
Reply:That's a lid? Looks pretty heavy to swing up and down. Will it be spring assisted, hinged, or wha... Pics will help I guess. Buddy of mine is in to building pits, he comes up with all kinds of strange ideas. The soldering toys pay for the welding toys.Hakko 928 dual iron, 4xHakko 936Madell 850D Hot Air SMT ReworkMiller 252, HTP Invertig 201 AC/DC, and a Hypertherm 45.
Reply:Done! Now I have to price adding some lift support shocks. It weighs about 80 or 90 lbs.I don't think a 55 gal drum would fit this too wellinsert pigs here, wait, eat, yum.Prolly could drink a beer while your waiting.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
Reply:From the block, I make the outside size about 48" x 80"! Now that's a good sized grill! They're going to need a lot of coals to run that puppy..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:i would have thought the angle frame is attached to the block, but i dont see any?looks like maybe 1" angle?
Reply:The angle frame is attached with 8 anchors. it's 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" x 1/8"Next time I'll use 3" x 3" x 1/4"I'm going to price out adding either lift supports or a counter weight.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
Reply:very nice. im gonna copy it one day!!!!
Reply:i was thinking before you said there were anchors there, you could weld some tabs on a few inches long to get the anchors down a few inches away from the edge. but it aint goin anywhere..i guess the loose expanded metal grill is toallow you to get in and shovel out ash from time to time?

Reply:Instead of adding some lift support shocks, why don't you work out some form of weighted counterbalance. It will stand up better than the shocks with the heat and weather, zero maintenance. I'm thinking some for of adjustable weight on an arm, kind of like the counterbalance on an apron brake. Maybe an arm that you bolt cast iron weights (dumbbells) to.Last edited by tessdad; 09-28-2009 at 07:42 PM.Reason: additional ideasJust my  opinion, not from a book, just from the road.Howes Welding Inc.www.howesweldinginc.com
