I am welding 1/8 Al. Dynasty 200 DX. Pure argon. I am using 3/32 2% lanthanated. 140 max on the machine with a foot pedal. A/C freq 130 balance 70. I am doing alot of corner joints. Al is super clean stainless brushed and acetone wiped.Question is this. Is this the correct size tung for this application. I know alot of people always use 3/32, but would 1/16 be better for arc control? I haven't tried 1/16 yet cause I dont have any. So should I go get some? Also what size cup?ThanxTrailblazer 302 AirpakDynasty 200 DX Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52 CamoMiller Dailarc 250 OLD But great!!2 Miller 140's w/autoset NEW! Reply:3/32 would be fine. 1/16 would be marginal at best.mm135HTP Invertig 201 With water cooler9" Southbend LatheLots of hand tools.
Reply:Neither will make a noticeable difference in your welds. Sometimes I use 1/8" because I can see it better.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I'd use the 3/32" Red..Sharpen to a point and let the ball happen as you go..Better arc control that way over a established ball...If the ball gets as big as the tungestion diameter stop and regrind..You will see a huge diffrence in control..I dont know the numbers but a cup size around your pinkey finger is a good starting point.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:For your project i would use pure tungsten.3/32 dia. tungsten good up to 140 amps which is the max for that size torch.I would use a GAS LENS and a #9 cup.Gas pressure about 10-15 lbs.
Reply:There is really no point to using pure tungsten anymore. I would say 2% ceriated or thoriated is the most common. Pure is kinda of old technology. 3/32 will handle will over 140 amps. I've used it at 350 before. It may not be reccamended for that current carrying capacity but it will hold up. --Gol'

Reply:pure tungsten is not needed if you are using a newer tig machine with square wave technology....and as zap said, no need to ball it, just sharpen it as normal and go....it will take care of itself.

Reply:Mr. Zap made a believer out of me for using 3/32" red for most everything. On AC with aluminum it makes a really small ball starting with a sharp point so it's not necessary to ball with DC+ or chemicals. It has a very stable arc and will do most anything you need with ordinary sized stock. My 2 cents.Miller Millermatic 252Miller Syncrowave 200Liincoln AC-DC 225Victor O-A Set |
