I'm pretty new to welding so I apologize if this is a newbie question.  I tried searching but not really sure what it is called to begin with.I want to recreate what is in the photo with steel...just the vertical tube. My main question is what's the best way to form the rings around the tube? Thanks in advance! Attached Images
Reply:If you are using steel, take a piece of steel rod of the appropriate size and wrap it around a piece of tube of the appropriate size.  Tack a short piece (about 1 foot will do) of the tube down on your welding table, then tack the end of the rod to the tube.  Once you have the rod tacked at a 90 degree attitude in relation to the tube, you can either wrap it cold or use a torch to heat the rod as you wrap it around and around the tube until you have something that looks like a long spring. Once you have enough wraps to make as many rings as you need, cut the wrapped rod off of the tube and saw your rings apart. Weld the ends together and dress the welds down so the ring looks continuous. Slide the rings onto the tubes you want for your part and tack them in a couple of inconspicuous areas. Two turn tables and a microphone.
Reply:Fabricate the rings.  Either find the proper diameter pipe or hole saw the rings out of plate.  They must fit the main tube.  Then grind the taper on them.Solder them onto the tube with a torch and plain old solder.Lightly sand the solder joints down.Doing one at a time will help.  Start at the bottom. If you take your time you can do this.  It don't look all that hard to me, just time consuming. lolp.s.  You'll probably haft to use solder flux with your solder joints. Good luck man
Reply:I saw a guy on Youtube that was doing just that, just not double rings.  He used a pipe chucked into a lathe, spun it with a torch held to it.  When it gets red feed in the tailstock to push the pipe together and it makes the pipe expand like that.
Reply:I did it.Look herehttp://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...hlight=NipplesThat is all I ever heard of that job.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I'm not trying to be a di_k, but you some of you all simply go about things all wrong. This is an easy job but you need to use the right tool. Machine the parts in a lathe. After you make several rings (which is all they are), slide them on the tube and weld or BRAZE in place.Do it right and be done with it. Don't weld a bead ring around it. The only way you can make the bead true is machine it after it is welded and if it is on a bent tube, forget about it!http://jackalopefab.com/MM210Synchrowave 200DXMiller XMT350 w/60series feederMiller Bobcat 250 with SGA 100 and spoolgunHTP PlasmaFull Machine shop with everything
Reply:Just make the rings with half round by heating and wrapping around a pipe Do a spiral then cut all of them with  zip wheel. Fit them onto the pipe or tube then weld the spot where you cut them from the spiral together and to the tube. A little weld on the other side and 30 seconds with a flap wheel and Bobs yer uncle.
