anyone out there know how to burn some good ol devil rod 7/16 with a vantage 500 WITHOUT all the friggin pinholes!?!?!?! i have been welding for about a week on a cement encased waterline 48" after they have grouted the outside which seeps in and dries in the gap. I do my best at buffing and cleaning out the grout and burn my root in and then cap it but there is always pinholes in my cap.....it takes about 45 min to do my root and cap and then i spend the next hour qc'n the dang thing....oh and im running the machine on 205.....thanks
Reply:Ok, I'll bite. What is Devil Rod?Are you grinding your root out or at least wire wheel clean before capping? Might not have a solid root pass.
Reply:yea everything is clean after the bead i brush it all off....my personal thoughts are that some trash is caught in the bead itself....the flux on the "devil rod" Haha is red that's the nickname i have learned for itand its just a 5p without the +

Reply:yea sorry 6010 5p....and yea i tried short whips tight circles long arching keeping the rod in the puddle until it just aaaaaaalmost wants to stick...everything that i know personally to try. I was wondering about that one knob on the machine i know absolutely nothing about.....it affects the way the weld lays in the joint as best i can tell by the little picture on it.
Reply:Arc force knob perhaps? Higher for 6010, lower for 7018.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
Reply:Rod angle to steep and running too high amps will result in bugholes. The o'll 5P is great rod but you cant spray it on......you have to weld it.A young green pipe welder asked an old salt one day...How can I make the weld on the bottom of the pipe look like the top.......The old salt replied....Screw up the top......
Reply:5P or 5P+ is usually pure joy. Its the low class rod that can be a pain. Porosity, pinholes or inclusions are usually operator error. Or crap rod to start.Lincoln Power MIG 210 MP ( boat anchor )Lincoln Weld-Pac 100 HDHobart IronMan 230Cutmaster 42Jackson NexGenSumner Ultra ClampsDWM120 |
