When tigging what pressure do you guys run on your Argon tank?  What indicators do you use to make adjustments? Thanks,Adam
Reply:15-20 CFH on a flometer, with a flo tube with a ball.  JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :

Reply:If you have neither of the above, then you don't have a flow meter, only a pressure regulator. Since the orifice size for this is basically the size of the hose and fittings, you'll need to use very little pressure to produce a huge flow, and you'll have no idea what the actual flow is.
Reply:Originally Posted by ChamferTrodeWhile both flow devices (flowmeter/flowguage) are set while gas is flowing, it is possible to use a simple regulator set while at static pressure and be relatively accurate, 1 psi is equal to the standard inert gas orifice for CFH, i.e. set the gauge at 20psi static, gives roughly 20CFH flowing.Of course those numbers on any flow device are indicators only, you disregard them and use the minimum gas coverage required to do the job. The professional notes them and uses that setting under like conditions.
Reply:In my experience, ordinary FLOW meters  suck. I will always prefer the KOIKE  precision  meters . No floating ball to mislead you . It has a dial that you turn to preset  your desired flow . I also have flowmeters (good ones ) , but none can compare to using the KOIKE meters . If you haven't used them , then you just can't understand . (plus, when i bought mine , the Koikes    cost less)[SIZE="5"Yardbird"
Reply:This is what you're talking about?http://www.koike.com/PDF/Accuflow16AR.pdfLooks good to me.
Reply:Depends alot too on conditions. In a perfect atmosphere with no drafts, 6(six) cubic feet per hr. will usuallydo if you hold your torch at the right angle.

Reply:The numbers are just starting points. I use as little as posible just to cut down overhead. Remember you can have to much gas 15 - 20 TIG 20 - 30 MIG any more and it will give you trouble. The hight gas flow will cause turbulance and foul your weld. It is critical to have the proper gas but the amount of that gas you use is really up to you. I end up running 8 to 10 for TIG and 18 to 20 for MIG and if there is and nastyness on the metal for even the slightest breez I turn up and run 30 on the MIG. Dont sweat it if you got no holes and a good bead your good to go. Steel Thunder Welding LLC. Reply:I agree with offrdfun. Too much gas caused turbulence in the puddle, making undesirable weld characteristics. If you are using a backup gas or a purge, the side effects of too much or not enough gas are different, but can be just as bad.
Reply:Lots of opinions here. I like the ball-type flowmeters. The regulator type are simply inaccurate and hard to read. I had two of them that I got with my Lincoln SP175 abd my Miller SW 200. I sold both of them on eBay. Heh heh. Miller Millermatic 252Miller Syncrowave 200Liincoln AC-DC 225Victor O-A Set
Reply:When TIG welding it is good to use as little gas as possible for two reasons, It is expensive, and you do not want to breathe it any more than necessary. The guage that has the colored balls is oriented toward mixed gases and tends to use more gas. Some guys like it because it looks high tech.More for aluminum /helium mix to diffrentiate between the different gases by having a colored ball to designate each gas present. The regular guage with needle works well when using straight Argon. With a gas lens on my torch and #9 cup I was able to get by with 10lbs pressure. If you see a lot of brown dust around your weld,  it is a sign of excessivly high gas pressure.Pre flow and post flow times need to be optimized as well to save gas. That is one of the reasons i did not like the Miller Econotig because post flow was non adjustable at 15 seconds with an air cooled torch. Very expensive touse the shielding gas to cool down a torch. Water cooled torches SAVE shielding gas.Last edited by Donald Branscom; 01-18-2008 at 11:50 AM.
Reply:My Smith ball flow meter I got with my MM 350P works fine and my duel gage I got with my Maxstar 150 STH also works good. The ball type are considerd "precision" if will have calibrated marks for each gas it is rated for HE AR 75/25 what ever. It does not mater the lenght of the hose it actualy mesures the flow as if leaves the tank. The guage setup has an orfice and at x presure it flows x amount of gas. If you use a longer hose like I do that number will no longer be acurate just a reference. The longer you weld and play with your gas settings you will figure out what works on you machine. Reply:Sorry I haven't been able to respond.  I just had a new baby girl on Monday.o.k.  I'm totally confused on both fronts. Why do they cry so freakin much? And how do I want to measure the flow?I don't have a flow guage.  I just have a regulator. So sounds like I should get a ball flow meter.  I didn't know they were calibrated for different gases.  What happens if I just grab any old one and use it.  Will ti really be off enough to matter?  Won't I be making adjustments anyway until I am running the bare minimum to operate?  How do I know I set the flow to low?  Does the weld get all rough looking or discolored?Thanks,AdamP.S.  I'm also confused on a third front.  Why is my wife so angry at me?  It's her fault she the one that got bored and opened a bottle of wine.
Reply:http://sssonlinestore.com/detail.asp...2202#sssanchorBuy this! I got one and it works just fine. It is marked for diferent gasses so this is the only one you will need.Congrats on the kid. We got to labs and they can be to much for me so I cant help with the real thing. Steel Thunder Welding LLC. Reply:They cry because they need their daddy to hold them, and if that doesn't work, mommy definitely will.  Seriously, bond with that kid now, it will pay you back later.Trust me.

Reply:TIG 10 to 15 MIG 25 to 30. He is not the same as AR the regulator is marked diferent. Argon works great for aluminum there is no need for HE unless you are doing something thick or critical. Im making a USCG inspected gas tank for a charter boat right now. Im using 3/16" bright AL treadplate. Im using pulse MIG with 100% argon the welds are great. Steel Thunder Welding LLC. Reply:Thanks guys.Don't worry I'm going to ove my two girls like it's my only job on earth.  They are my only true investment.  I was just kidding about the crying.  This one has been very easy so far (just jinxed myself).  My first had a milk allergy we didn't know about and it was a 24/7 nightmare for all.So since I'm just a hobbiest welder.  I use it to support my racecar hobby. I guess I'll just buy a used one for now.  Anybody have one they want to sell?  I don't see any on the classifieds.  My other alternative is I think I can pull one (calibrated for air) out of a junk bin at work.  Could I get a conversion chart from air to argon if I find one? Thanks,Adam

Reply:It really doesn't matter how well the reg is calibrated.  A little expirimenting will give you the minimum flow required.  This isn't rocket science.DennisThermal Arc 185-TSWMillermatic Challenger 172VictorO/AAtlas Craftsman 12 by 24 LatheEsab PCM-875Wholesalem Tool Mill-DrillFinally, someone that makes sence, without quoting a book.  Thanks.  JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
