Oil Rig work...

Can anyone give me some tips/info on working on an oil rig?  Im finishing welding school soon, and would like to work on a rig in the Gulf of Mexico as a welder helper, and eventually a welder.Any info on how I should go about doing this?  What companies to apply with?  How to apply (online or in person?), etc.  Thanks and all answers are greatly appreciated.Read my welding blog:http://weldeveryday.wordpress.com/
Reply:Now days....the web is the way to go first. The best way will be to look up drilling companies listed around the Gulf areas....then apply that route. Off shore is a differant animal....most are 7 days on 7 days off in the gulf.....some are even 30 on 30 off.....good luck.A young green pipe welder asked an old salt one day...How can I make the weld on the bottom of the pipe look like the top.......The old salt replied....Screw up the top......
Reply:It would help to know someone in the industry. It is kind of a closed system. I would suggest acquiring a TWIC card and HUET training. Reply:you should get a twic card.  that will help.  also osha card.go to craigslist and check skilled trade and craft for these areas.biloxi, gulfport, houma, mobile, new orleans, lake charles, pascagoula.   you will find companies that are hiring and a lot of agencies that are hiring on behalf of companies.see if you can get a 4g cert. i doubt you'll get out there as a helper but who knows;  try  to get in with a co. that does support work for offshore oil,  then keep your eyes and ears open.have a resume, a fax, a phone and the ability to scan to email.good luck.
Reply:Some Co's require a 6GR D1.1 for TKY connections, for starters.  JGSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:Most turnarounds will be advertizing for help in local paper. Thats how I got started.
Reply:Get a mail subscription to the Times Picayune(sp) newspaper, or maybe online it might be available. This is the New Orleans daily newspaper and all sorts of offshore/shipbuilding jobs are listed in it. Start calling the jobs and see what they require. This is how I got my captains job out in the oilfield.Headhunters are always listed as well, they'll find you a job and take your first 2 weeks of pay. Good luck
