I'm new here.  I'm welding ignorant.  I need advise.I can't find a local welding program except for the Tusla Welding School.  More than I need.I'm building an old CJ and I need to learn how to repair the frame, build bumpers, repair thin sheet metal, tack a roll cage together and take it to have a pro. finish the welds, etc.  My neighbor is a retired welder but he has a pace maker and cant be within 100 ft of the welder when it's on.  But he sold me ($50) an old welder. It's a Linde - Utility Welder, 230v, with a low range of 40-150 and a high of 50-230.  Is this a good welder for general work?My welding improved greatly when I got an auto darkening helmet.  I can at least hold an arc.  And I've stuck metal together. So my question is, will this welder do everything I need it to do.  Or should I get a small 110 MIG to weld thin stuff.  My neighbor told me this welder is for bigger stuff and will blow holes in thin stuff.  I assume he is correct.  But he is away building a retirement home in the mountains.  So what should I buy?  Or can I dial this machine down enough to weld the thin stuff.  Do I get a little 110 red or blue from Home Depot or Lowes? And any suggestions on where to get some good (free webcast stuff is good) videos on how to weld, what to look for in penetration, etc. etc.I know practice, practice, practice but I don't want to practice the wrong stuff.  I want to make strong welds and do it right.  I'm not afrade of learning or taking the time to do it right.Better yet, if anyone knows of a place to take a beginners course in Jacksonville Florida, please let me know.  Thanks.......................
Reply:Dont quote me on this but set to the lowest heat and a 3/32 rod would be good for smaller stuff. I am learning to, good luck!
Reply:Yes it will handle what you want to do. If you want to do frame repair you better get to the Tulsa School of Welding. By the time you finish there you will be able to do it. It requires years to get to the level where you can safely make a repair of that type. My advice is take it to a pro for that because your betting your life on it. I have people come in all the time with cracked frames. I send them down the road because I don't want the liability. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:NEO Vo-tech has welding classes.  Bartlesville also has classes.  If you can get to Miami sometime I would be glad to help as much as my limited expirience allows.DennisThermal Arc 185-TSWMillermatic Challenger 172VictorO/AAtlas Craftsman 12 by 24 LatheEsab PCM-875Wholesalem Tool Mill-Drill
