A customer didnt like how his tilt bed slammed down when he drove up on it, so I installed a new hydro cylinder (boxing in the mounts channel x-member).  Then he didn't like the old latching system, so I made one that would stay up, or latch without hangup when it was in the down position.  The old hinge assembly was wore out and sloppy, so we installed a new pin and outer plates. It got a new jack as well. And finally I put a big slab of steel on the tail of the trailer because the hinge was not in the center of the bed.  That made things alot easier to lift by hand. Attached ImagesCommon sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:Does that ram and check valve system provide restriction in the tilt down direction too? That's a pretty neat latch system.
Reply:I want to know how that hydraulic cylinder works with the different volumes on each side of the piston.  Do you have a breather in the circuit somewhere? My name's not Jim....
Reply:I didnt put the cylinder together.. It is a closed system with just the right amount of hydraulic oil in it.  It works pretty nice in both directions even with it being almost on it's side.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.

Reply:That looks very similar to my tilt trailer, I may have to take some of your ideas  Very curious about that hydraulic piston.
Reply:I may stand to be corrected, but i am pretty sure that valve is a flow restriction valve, which allows you to be able to control the amount of fluid moving through it(speed cylinder retracts, extends). There is no need for breathers as it is a closed circut. And because there is a smaller area on the rod end, the tilt bed should tilt down(flat) faster than it will tilt back. It seems complicated, but when you sit and think about it, it isnt real complicated, just the basic theory behind a hyd cylinder.Last edited by sidthss; 10-31-2009 at 01:43 AM.Miller Dynasty 300dxSpeedglas 9002XMiller Spectrum 375 XtremeLincoln PowerMig 255xtLincoln PowerMig 140cMilwuakee Portaband

Reply:I vote for a cylinder teardown just so we can see how it works. If it were mine I'd do it....My name's not Jim....
