Picked up a Rockwell vertical bandsaw and in the process of reworking it (repair, paint ect.)Removed the table and noticed the trunion was cracked. The trunion is held on with 3 bolts all but one is frozen and I was able to remove the cracked front piece. Question since the main trunion casting is intact can I get by with using epoxy on the broken piece or should it be welded. If welded I'm concerned about warpage issues and since I can't remove the other 2 bolts the broken piece will have to be welded with the trunion still on the bandsaw.see picsSouthbend 13" latheBuffalo 18Warner Swasey #3 Turret latheMiller 180Miller Dialarc Miller Diversion 165

Reply:What about brazing it with bronze filler and a torch?
Reply:Epoxy it or throw it away. If the saw works like it is, it isn't going to help it much to repair it half ***.It'll probably work as long as you need it. Mac
Reply:Looking at the fracture surface with all that rust, it has been like that a long time. If you do want to weld it, it will need a lot of cleaning in the joint and nearby. If the saw works and holds alignment as is, then maybe it is not worth repairing. Depends on your needs, I guess. Try an air impact wrench to get the stuck bolts off. Then try heat.-DaveXMT304 with: 22A Feeder, or HF251 Hi Freq DC TIG air cooled
Reply:You might consider looking for a replacement but as Rockwell doesn't support their metalworking equipment anymore might be tough.Try: www.plazamachinery.comIf it isn't listed on inventory, email him as he has a lot of stuff that isn't listed.
Reply:Still on the fence on how to do the repair. Doing the research on how to weld cast iron. With the table off I can get a very minor flex if I push down on the portion that is still attached. I know if the broken portion is re-attached it will stop the trunion from flexing and give a solid mount for the table.Southbend 13" latheBuffalo 18Warner Swasey #3 Turret latheMiller 180Miller Dialarc Miller Diversion 165 |
