Seeing more and more of these types of pics... how do they do it?  The heat would roast my hands...

Reply:Alot of times I don't wear gloves when fitting and tacking. Also, unless I happen to have a brand new, clean pair of gloves I don't wear one on the filler hand.Miller EconotigCutmaster 38Yes ma'am, that IS a screwdriver in my pocket!
Reply:Its personal preference, and practice. Some people hate gloves.I have chef friends who will reach into a 3 gallon pot of boiling water, pull out a piece of pasta, and check if its done yet- after you do that for a few years, you burn off all the nerve endings in your hands, and it doesnt hurt anymore.Me, I wear gloves, and quite often when I am tig welding, the gloves actually start smoking. Especially on aluminum, or copper, where you are talking high amps. But often enough, just on steel or stainless, if its a big piece with lots of welds. I catch my sleeve on fire, my gloves burn up, and I shudder to think if it was my fingers. Now dont get me wrong, I have plenty of burn scars all over- I do a fair amount of forging, and red hot pieces leave little marks on arms, chest, neck, and so on. Rebar makes interesting scars.
Reply:I don't use a glove on my filler hand either..Never have Never will..But yet I can get the filler down to 3/4" while the "fingers" on the torch glove are smokin'...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:I just don't know how you can do it... Is it all in the amount of pedal pushed or what?  Because I just can't imagine even trying it on 3/8 steel...

Reply:I used to not wear gloves but my hands had a weird smell to them that was kinda annoying. Unless I was welding for a super long time or really hot, no gloves was fine.Miller Syncrowave 180SDMillermatic 175

Reply:It is a proven fact that UV radiation causes skin cancer. The electic arc gives off UV radiation. That is why your eyes hurt like hell when you are exposed to arc welding. Everyone knows that, right? It will catch up with you on your hands and arms, just years down the road.I spent my early years swinging a hoe and driving a tractor in a tee shirt and without gloves. Cars didn't have air conditioning yet so I drove with my arm hanging out the window. My forearms and the back of my hands are covered with white spots from the dermatolagist's nitrogen bottle. He has told me several times, "This isn't something you did last week, this is from 20 or 25 years ago". I've been lucky, just precancers so far. I have never arc welded without long sleeves and gloves. My wife has lived in New Mexico all her life. New Mexico has a high incidence of skin cancer because the high altitude and clear skies doesn't filter out the uv radiation. She has had basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and had a precancer removed two weeks ago. Protect youself from UV radiation!
Reply:While I'm preaching about the dangers of UV radiation I'll throw this story in. My life long buddy, ran around together all thu school, had a double wedding, and continued to hang out until jobs seperated us, developed basal cell carcinoma on his left fore arm. Yea, the one that hung out the car window. That was 16 years ago and the doctors got it all they said. It reoccurred last winter and he was dead in less than three months. It was a very bad way to die. Don't take chances with UV.
Reply:That weird smell is the surface of your flesh burning away from UV exposure. This is not good. It's the same smell you'll experience when gettin Lasik eye surgery or getting branded. Like I said, this is not good.
Reply:The reason they make &sell tig gloves is for protection. Those who don't want it ,deserve what happens to them . They are asking for it . Hells Angels have parties where each guy brings and throws into a bowl, a whole handful of pills and then mix up the pills ,then everyone of them take a hand ful. Would you do that just because they do ? I don't think it's "manly" , i think it's  stupid .[SIZE="5"Yardbird"

Reply:I come to work with sunburned hands...  that's about all i have to say about that
Reply:Gloves on both hand for me.
Reply:About that skin cancer. Most men get skin cancer on the left forearm, that is the arm on the driverside of your car. The results are in books in the library.I am a Viet Nam vet and at that time there was no awareness about skin cancer. I got skin cancer on the top edges of my ears because there was no skin block at the time. The worst danger is your thyroid gland at the base of your neck getting exposed. that is why Ialways wear black T shirts that fit up close around my neck. The black absorbs the light.Pay now or pay later....Drivers in Australia get cancers on their right arm cause they drive on the right side of the road. That is according to my dermatoligist anyway. One summer in the '70's the top of my ears started peeling off in big chunks and got really sore. Finally went to the Dr. after they started bleeding. He told me the sun caused it and it was called kerotosis (?) and I needed to wear a hat. Asked him how I could get a hat in my welding hood. He said I might have to bandage them to protect them from the sun and that is what I wound up doing. About that time I read an article in "Infisherman Magazine" by Dr. Jack Graham about the dangers of skin cancer to anyone exposed to a lot of sun or UV light. That is where I learned about sunscreens. They work. Incidentally Dr. Graham practices in a town about 95 miles from me. I started going to him about a year after my ears gave me problems. Every year he gets some spots. Some of them have been precancerous.Take care of your skin.
Reply:This is my first post after reading the forums for quit a while.  I cannot believe the stupidity I have just read("never have never will, "war stories").  Let's see how any of you feel when you are diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma and are told that it will be terminal.  Some of you are good at what you do BUT it does catch up with you.  Take it from somebody who has gone through 4 bouts of cancer and treatment.  Fortunately I am still alive and practicing the hobby I love but some of you may not be with the sentiments posted.
Reply:I feel that there's NOTHING to gain by not wearing gloves.  Sex may FEEL better without a condom, but if you screw whores without one, you're taking a big chance just fo that feel. The same is true with wearing gloves...except the FEEL isn't even an enjoyable thing.  I've always worn gloves.  I may not have hands like a woman, but they don't scratch up my wife's face when I touch her either.  I know she appreciates it.

Reply:1st time I Tig welded I had gloves on both hands and a blue long sleeve pull over shirt. Reply:Originally Posted by EngloidI know we've disagreed on this before, but answer one question....If you wore gloves on both hands, would you learn to weld just as well, after getting used to it?If you tell me no, I will have to believe you're lying...cause I think you know you could do it without much problem.  Therefore, what I'm saying is that when you say that you can feel more, it's just a crutch and is not a factor that your welding abilities are pending upon or limited by.

Reply:what about the oil from your skin? I dont know, I always wear those tillman tig gloves. When I am welding its almost like the metal is friggen melting, I mean its getting REALLY hot. I dont know. I like havin the dead cow skin protecting my hand. I was issued two when I was born, the warranty ran out. Im stuck with these.Last edited by Burnit; 02-11-2008 at 08:50 PM.

Reply:I dont weld all day everyday at work and I do at times get a bit "relaxed" in the way of PPE at times. However,Whether you do or do not follow all the taught safety procedures I feel it is inappropriate and irresponsible to advocate or advertise your safety "short cuts" particularly if you are a respected poster on a forum with a lot of young and non professional readers.Brett (my 2c)Now that thats said ....back to our normal programming...A good guess is better than a bad measurement

Reply:I try to wear gloves all the time, I am a human burn magnet, so it's just what I need to do. Im not yet 40, and my hands already look like murder weapons. I have to protect them any way I can, I still need them. Only time I weld without a glove is if I am jumping in to show someone a quick correction or something when teaching them to weld. But I won't do it for more than a few seconds, it's too easy to get caught without some protection. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.

Reply:I just was told always to wear gloves and as a newb to all of this... It was a complete shock to see so called "Professionals", doing welding on TV with no gloves on... So my first thought was... is this how you do it, when you are just that good.. or just old school, or just stubborn?
Reply:Could be 1/16 tungsten and a quick tack in the pic.Gloves for me always. The cow has saved me more skin than I count. That cow got pinched for me, caught fire for me, burned and blackend all for me.All hail cow skin the welders best friend!!Is it just me or does anyone else sit or stand with a welding rod and a gloved hand and feed it back and forth? You know during those moments between tacks, or other waiting for something times.
Reply:I wasn't branded, but some dip**** was getting it done in the local tat shop when I was in there. Smelled just like tigging w/o gloves. Yummy.
Reply:Better the cow than me...A good guess is better than a bad measurement
Reply:Zapster, maybe you'll be lucky and they will only have to cut off your hand and part of your arm to save your life. LOL.  The billboard with the guy with no lower jaw from smoking made me think of that.As far as cows go, I prefer deer and elk. They are more comfortable and last a lot longer for me.

Reply:I'll make a deal with everyone...Everybody stop smoking..Everybody stop driving with a cellphone glued to your ear..Then I'll wear a glove..I'm lucky to still be here anyway..I concider every day "extra time" that I still get up..To this day and there were many witnesses NOBODY but NOBODY that saw me get run over by the truck can explane why I walked away from it..I may have ended up 1/8 mile from where I got hit but I walked back to the point of impact...The face first into the tree stump from a bike jump gone bad is example #2 why I should not be here now..So if your trying to scare me It Aint' Workin' And the comment about Sue and the cancer is a low blow...She was buried Saturday.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
