I now have a grand total of just over 6 hours of GTAW under my belt.. I welded T's today....  (well more of a leaning "t's".. LOL... )First one, free hand... (start of the day.. and start of hour #3) You can clearly see it didn't tie in, on half of the piece and very inconsistent...Welded up two more of these just like it.. and they turned out just about the same.. so I asked for a little insight as to what I was doing wrong.. and what I was doing right.. My instructor showed me a few things.. and basically said I was not doing so good... in which I agreed... but wanted to know where to go from there... in which he showed me how to run a consistent bead and how to push the rod towards the torch, and manipulate the pedal better...First "T" after... (showing the 3 different beads and layers/levels)Other side of same "T"... ( 3 Layers also, but hard to see )And here is the last two beads I ran right before cleaning up for the night.. ( 6th Hr. )  Had about 4 or 5 inches of filler rod left... and the short one was about and inch and half which is why it is so short.. I could not hold the rod anymore and weld it... As always, input, criticism, comments and jokes are welcome...
Reply:The last one looks pretty good. How do you do that weave thing? I just got my TIG welder in today and am going to fire it up tomorrow.Lincoln PowerMIG 215XTLincoln Precision TIG 225Hypertherm 300
Reply:What an improvment in 6 hours!  Can you see the puddle clearly?  Still undercut on the last one, but  you sure did improve!Twisted Minis.  Its a "stitch weld", Zap is the man to tell you.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:"stitch weld"? is that just slapping the filler rod in the 90* and rocking up and down with the tungsten?
Reply:Where is ZAP when you need him?He taught me.   First you need a stringer.  Then you weld to each side of the stringer...Back and forth....like sewing it together.  DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Yeah, I needed to push the rod in a bit more and I need to remember to lift the pedal towards the edges and step back on it in the middle... just a lot to learn in a short time.. LOL...  and I am finally learning to see the puddle...  took me a while to learn the length of the Tungsten tip sticking out...Thanks for the input guys!!!!!!!!!!

Reply:looks like you were walking the cup on the last one?Have we all gone mad?
Reply:Egg Zach Lee...Walking It Out...  LOL...   I love that technique... I will use that as much as possible..
Reply:I would say you should be able to run a solid single stringer first, it will pay off big in situations when you dont have a nice t-joint practice piece on a table.Have we all gone mad?

Reply:Well I made progress today.. and I made several brain farts... LOL..First off, I was eager to get some welding done, so I could get ahead of the game... so I started welding in the 2G position... (horizontal) but upon doing so, I don't know what I was thinking but 1) I forgot to tie my beads together... 2). I didn't use 1/8 filler rod... 3). Forgot to start in the 1G position, so I could take my first 1G test...After all that was said and done, I did run a bead on piece so I could take it home, so the whole day was not a complete loss... I did get some more time on the machine and I did learn what NOT to do.. LOL..Here are a few pics of my last piece of the day..Side view...
Reply:thats a nice loooking weld on some thing metal for GTAW!! is that a single pass or multi pass? how much filler rod did you put into that?
Reply:Whats the purpose of a stitch weld? is it for strength or just loooks?
