Today, some Oxy beads from class, no filler yet. Will have filler in the next day or so.Feedback appreciatedI'm 21 and learningAvid 4wd enthusiastASE Master tech (Automotive), mechanic/fabricator by trade
Reply:Are you using a circular motion? Do you keep the blue flame off the work?Looks alright actually, very good. Most people never even try it. I would be afraid to see what mine look like. Last time I welded with oxygen and acetylene was in a gas station, welding a muffler pipe together. I liked using a tip bigger then I needed and moving along pretty fast. But you have to watch for depressions. I was a TIG welder since I was nine, so I have a lot of experience with adding in filler wire. It helps when you gas weld and move along fast. Sincerely, William McCormick
Reply:Yes, a rather fast circular motion. This was my first time OXY EVER, and I like it. It seemed to work best when the inner bullet was slightly above the surface to prevent popping. Ugh...this welding class is making me want to go buy a stick welder for the thick stuff, and an oxy setup for thin stuff...I love welding for some reason. So isnt TIG basically Oxy except the fact that its electric, and you need shielding gas?I'm 21 and learningAvid 4wd enthusiastASE Master tech (Automotive), mechanic/fabricator by trade

Reply:Never let the inner cone of your O/A flame touch your metal. If your torch is popping raise the gas pressure to the tip slighty till it quits popping. If this creates too much heat drop down one size on your tip. After you do this a while you will learn what size tip the thickness of your metal requires to weld it. Always maintain a neutral flame.
Reply:Like Oldtimer said, keep the inner cone out of the puddle, and if you are getting popping in the torch you are probably running too low of pressure for the tip, or you are WAY too close to the piece.
Reply:I learned tig welding from the first, and for a very long time after the only, school trained welder I ever met. Training went kind of like this: Do you know how to weld with a torch? Yep. This is your torch, this is your rod. Now do it. I never looked back. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:What type of rods do you use for mild steel? Sincerely, William McCormick

Reply:Every muffler shop around here has a MIG setting by the lift. I never worked in a muffler shop but I built a few exhaust systems crawling around on my back under the vehicle. Hard work! I have done it with O/A and MIG. Much easier and faster with MIG. MUch less likel to start a fire too.
