I'm trying to think through a personalized wedding gift idea of fabbing up a nice wrought iron project that includes scrollwork of the couple's last name. What do you think of some kind of door knocker along those lines? Maybe 12 - 14 inches diameter with the last name initial and a knocker that could be hung on a front door? Anyone got any thoughts on this one? I really want something to incorporate the initial in it - doesn't have to be a door knocker...
Reply:Sounds good, IF it goes with the theme of their home. Some new modern homes/entries would look awkward with ornamental iron, especially one that size. A lawn ornament could also work, as could a house number placard.

Reply:Actually, right now they are in a rental home and are looking for a home to buy. That's why I was thinking of something to simply hang on a door. I don't think something about 12" diameter would look overbearing regardless of the house... But, that's why I'm bouncing ideas off yall... So, keep the suggestions coming!Thank you!
Reply:Take a look at their porch light. If it's mounted on the outside wall, as opposed to an overhead, you could make them a personalized 'designer plate' that would be sandwched under the mounting.Take off the light, disconnect the wires, slip the plate over the wires, reconnect and replace the light.Take a que from those medallions that are used on ceiling fans/lights.This could be taken with them wherever they go.
Reply:Maybe a sundial with the initial in the middle. They could put it out front for decoration, or put it in the garden when they get a new place. Probably don't have to be as concerned if it doesn't match the house.

Reply:Anymore, from a security standpoint, it's not recommended that you put your last name on the mailbox or door. Makes it too easy for some scumbag to get your name and house number and get a phone number to check if anyone is home.
Reply:Well, I ended up doing more of a lawn / front yard deal. It has thier initial and the house number on it. I made the house number plate so it would just take adhesive numbers so they change it when they move. It's a combination of 1/4" round bar and 1/8" x 1/2" flate bar. To finish it I bead blasted it then painted it hammered black. It's hard to beat Hammerite for stuff like this! Attached Images
