Gentlemen,I am going to be bidding on a job,  and before I bid on this particular job I was told I would have to show documentation of where the Steel supplier gets his steel from, and It can be no further away than 500 miles from the Steel Supplier.  Is there a specific name for this? And What is the reason behind this?  Please explain this to me if you can. Thanks Don.Some Blue , Some Red & Some GreyProverbs 16:2-3.2 "All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. 3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."

Reply:that would be a  lot of mills;  do we have that many?   i'm thinking they want american made/certs.well, since it can be no further than five hundred miles from the supplier then probably no problem;   of course that really doesn't make much sense but we're not looking at the paperwork; you are.Last edited by fdcmiami; 01-19-2012 at 08:48 PM.
Reply:Thats what im thinking,  I really didnt get into the specifics of the job with the Contractor at this point.  I could only figure they want American Union made steel with Certifications of Tensil Strength... and with proper documentation. Some Blue , Some Red & Some GreyProverbs 16:2-3.2 "All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. 3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."
Reply:Sounds like a LEED project and they are going for a regional materials credit. A certain percentage of the projects material (by cost) has to be harvested, processed, and manufactured within a 500mi radius of the project. Unless you have both ore mines, steel mills, rolling mills and your shop all within a 500mi radius of the project they will not get a regional material credit for the steel. If this is for any project with Federal money in it they are required to pursue LEED certification on their projects.https://www.leedonline.com/irj/go/km...5/mrc5_req.pdfLet me know if the link doesnt work
Reply:+1 to what ironmangq said. +.5 to what DieselDon said. A union shop is very likely not a requirement. The LEED cert is most likely.Ive worked on jobs where the steel is shipped and fabbed en route from SE asia. Amazingly that was cheaper than domestic products. But the fit up sucked! Just my take on that job was the contractor didnt save any money after all of the modifications we did. One real advantage of having a fab shop nearby is that a new piece can get out to the job quickly!Weldanpower 225 G7Ironworkers Local #24
Reply:We have the Domestic steel requirement(red iron)  in almost all our jobs since it's gov't money as well as the LEED (this can apply to many different types of material). Funny, had a real shake-up about 8 yrs back. The fabricator was our neighbor, about a 9 iron away, but he outsourced his shop drawingsto an outfit in Romania. All the work except for that was done right here in NW Indiana.
