Oklahoma welder receives stiff sentence for slagging on the job.  The judge was heard to say "Ought to throw away the keys"  Onlookers in the courtroom gasped GASP! as the sentence was handed down.  90 days hard timeRough terrain hinges give some play for uneven ground. You can see the redesign with the small feet instead of the full bottom rail sitting in the dirt.  Dunno why ai made the first two like that, wasn't thinkingOverall height is 64 inches, length per piece is 10 feet.  Dimensions favored by Powder River manufacturing.  (Some of the best cattle equipment on the market, which Joe is familiar with).  I have the catalog, but can't afford the goodies they build.  I figure these are much stronger anyway.  I don't want to have to build these again in my lifetime.A piece of smaller square tubing was slipped through the top rail, and the panels were hung on the crane to degrease and prime.  Last 4 will be primed tomorrow, then a few days cure time until finish coat.A word on imported steel these days.  THEY OIL THE CRAP OUT OF THE STUFF SO IT DOESN'T RUST ON THE BOAT.....WASTE OILMaterial cost around $65 per panel, helper labor around $24-32.  My labor.........priceless  Not terribly cost effective unless you do all the work yourself.   Multiply the cost by the 8 panels I completed, and it adds up in a hurry, but it is a one time thing. On the other hand, the process is faster, and easier on your body when you have help. Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Did you weld the hinges with the Hobart 135? Really nice looking welds on them.
Reply:Looks great Samm! Yeah I hear ya on the oil-slick imported steel.  I've been going  through acetone and rags like crazy cleaning that mess up!Don't the long slots in your hinges allow for alot of slop in the fit?  Seems like the panels would be wagging around alot.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:Looks good, I'm getting ready to do some hay ring repair here, new ones too high and money too scarce. Making one good one out of two smashed ones, have to do some cutting and welding to make them decent. Darn cows don't appreciate a thing thoughRob H.

Reply:How do you drill the long slots in the hing they look so clean. did it or can it be done with a drill press?Looks real niceDave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:Reebs look here.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=36503He used a mill. You can't do this with a drill press, even with a cross slide table. At best, drill holes at each end and the cut between with a slitting wheel. Or torch or plasma will do the same. I have a jig I had my buddy mill to do that with my plasma. He milled it slightly oversized so I cut a slot close to what I needed to do multiples. A mill or better yet an ironworker is the fastest and cleanest however..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Samm, that's a rough sentence from the judge but looks like you can make a break for it by climbing the rungs!  You could cut the bottom rail out of those two and use it to make some feet.  Get rid of the extra weight and save some material.

Reply:about the welds holding the milled slot pieces to the tube.....i see the weld does not make an attempt to "turn the corner" at the end..just stops on the flat... seems id heard that ending like that creates a weak spot where a crack wants to start? should such a fillet wrap around at the end?

Reply:not looking to spank ya..just learnin..i find the difference between the flat weld and the one that wraps around immense in terms of difficulty..that 1/2" weld that turns the corner at the  start and stop  of a straight bead means lots of contortions..a 180 turn  at the begiinning and end of the bead...either that or stops and starts..
