Does anyone know what a Gems sensor is and does? I recently bought a Dynasty 200sd that was complete with a Miller Coolmate 4 and CK worldwide torch and a foot pedal.Near the foot pedal 14 pin amphenol there is a wire spliced in that connects to a wire on the gems sensor that is located near the end of the water return going back into the cooler.I would like to find out what this is and does. Thanks' Attached Images
Reply:it s a flow switch. http://www.gemssensors.com/Products/...witches/Piston
Reply:I have looked at there web site but was unsure of how it actually works. If there is no coolant flow will it not let you weld when the foot pedal is pressed? In all my years of tig welding I've never run across one of these things. I am familiar with what happens when there is no coolant to the torch, most people that have done much tig work like myself have had to learn this lesson the hard way.Lol. If it will save a power cable it is money well spent.
Reply:Yep I would guess someone melted a couple of cords.
Reply:They save a lot of leads.  We had a similar system on our water cooled gun leads.  It cost almost 1000 dollars for a new lead.  Ours had a light that went on when coolant was flowing.  When coolant stopped the power was cut.
Reply:You don't happen to see a part number of the GEMS?I maintain a few GEMS at work in a sea water system for monitoring flow. Quite a bit of maintenance required to keep them registering correctly due to the verdigris.
Reply:leightrepairs is correct.  Gems makes a wide variety of sensors.  This one happens to be a flow switch.  The body contains a spring-loaded piston that only partially fills the flow channel inside the body.  The open flow area and the spring constant together determine the flow required to push the piston, which contains a magnet, far enough to actuate the reed switch located in the bulge on the outside of the body. The flow switch must be matched to the coolant flow requirements of the torch, so if you are contemplating replacing the flow switch for some reason, you should either get an exact replacement from the torch manufacturer or get one with the proper actuation point for the coolant flow required by the torch you are using.  Some of the more expensive Gems flow switches (the ones I am familiar with have a rectangular brass body) have a moderate range of adjustment that would allow you to set the actuation point. You also have to know whether the control circuitry of the welder requires a normally closed or a normally open switch.awright
