this has to come up on this forum at least once before. Yup, just checked, in 04.  well, its been 5 years, that warrants a repost [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlZh9-NQEyI[/ame]Last edited by oxy moron; 10-10-2009 at 02:52 PM.
Reply:I have a fuzzy recall of that story and remember when it first happened. Can't say that the guy was all that far off base.
Reply:I won't stand up and cheer for him. And I won't say he was right. I won't say I've ever had thoughts like that. But only because of the need to be Politically Correct in this world.I will say he was determined. He had a plan and executed that plan very well. If I were in his shoes, I would have done one better and loaded up that oxy/fuel setup you know he owns...and used it to fill the cab of the dozer once he became immobile. Then he could have struck a match and demolished his own mad creation and finished off the rest of that building. But that's just a movie script I would be thinking about. I would never post on a public welding forum anything malicious or devious or terroristic. That would be wrong! Very wrong. Reply:I'm on dialup, can't do the youtube thingIf it's the story I remember, it occurred during the farm crisis.  Bankers pulling their usual crap.  Big loans on farms, then the bottom fell out, and they started calling the loans in.Shame the guy didn't level the bankers house with him in it.The stinking bankers still do this to some extent.A guy will borrow money to buy some feeders to run on wheat during the Winter, if the price of beef starts falling the bankers will arbitrarily call the loan in, forcing the dude to sell the livestock short, the farmer takes the loss not the fatazz bankers.  Nice deal huh?"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Sounds just like the routine they use here in Upstate NY! Reply:I am all for free enterprize and deregulation, but there has to be some limits.  Banks calling in loans for any reason other than delinquent payments should be forbidden by law.  There are millions of cases in which businesses, especially small business and farms, were forced into bankruptcy and forced to close even though the loans were being paid on time.  Like the home mortgage that gets submerged because of a drop in the market.  So what if the market value drops below the  principal on the loan?  If the homeowner (or farmer) is still making payments on time then the bank would be better served to maintain the loan.  Forcing the mortagee into bankruptcy serves no usefull purpose to anyone other than the stupid accountants who can't balance the banks books when the mortgaged properties are valued at less then the outstanding principal. As for Dozer Madness, it wasn't about banks.  It was about business relationships and business deals in town.  As much as I'd like to comment further this forum is a permanent and public record and what I understand of the facts I can't authenticate or verify.  So I plead the fifth.-MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:If memory serves, he was mad at the ex-mayor, city hall, the concrete company, and the hardware store owner (city councilman) because they gave a permit to the concrete company for permanent operation and expansion which is located next door to his business.
Reply:Wow- scary what that thing can do.  I chuckled at the empty scraper/carry-all that they thought would stop it.  Unless you had two bigger dozers to block him in, I don't think there's much that could stop it.        Or maybe somehow getting sand/water into the air intake, but he probably thought of armoring the air-filter too.  Is there some "weak link" in the crawler tracks that could have been exploited or is it pretty much unstoppable? Reply:appears to be a 637 scraper and that had no chance of stopping that Komatsu dozer. maybe a shot to the left side hydro tilt ram may have done the trick, causing all the fluid leak out, then the dozer blade would simply drop to the ground digging in.Now if the scraper operator got the front bail underneath the ripper shank he may have slowed it down a bit before it got ripped off, but since there was a .50 cal rifle mounted in the cab I wouldn't have even tried...
Reply:I just viewed this for the first time today, and I found it really sad....The gentleman that armoured the dozer was obviously highly skilled, and highly creative...Just think what he might have been able to accomplish in his lifetime if he wasn't driven to such madness.  It could have ended so many different ways than this. What is even sadder is that now, after what - 5 years? All that is left is a fuzzy recolection of what the circumstances were... So whatever the problems preceding this rampage were, and whatever he was trying to highlight, and bring to the public eye, have fallen to the way side.In a thought.... Ultimately, WHAT did he die for, if nothing has become of it?Forgive me gentlemen for taking this in another direction - I guess for me, it is just the harsh reality of the situation versus the holiday season.  It has quite an impact.Later,Jason

Reply:I was up at Grand lake when that happened. It's about 10 or 15 miles from Grandby crazy stuff.
Reply:I typed up a long philosophical post regarding the bulldozer guy, but deleted it all, being that this is a welding forum.I thought the guy built a really cool armored bulldozer.  I had dreams of building one when I was about 8 years old.  But I never thought about destroying anything with it, or using it against anyone.  I'm sorry guys, but there is nothing admirable or good about what the man did.  There is no justification for it whatsoever.  If anything good can be said about it from the limited information we have, it would have to be about his being a good welder and creative thinker.TonyMiller Maxtron 300Miller Spoolmatic 3Victor Journeyman II"Twern't my ignorance done me in, but what I knowed that wasn't so."  Uncle Tom's Cabin
