This guy states he is at the top of his welding class.Lets hear your opinions on this quality of fab work.

Reply:I'm no expert, but............. everything here looks dangerous!When I was a tech inspector for the SCCA and failed a roll cage I would tell the driver to take his car to a few local welders and the first one who said "what moron did this crap"  have him fix it....

Reply:Yeah Samm, but I've seen way too much of the same sort of fab work shown in this thread on the 4x4 sites. Unfortunately the guys there think that it's all hot $hit and great. Usually the guy who did the work is bragging about how he taught himself to weld or just learned, and commenting on how great his POS 110v machine is over a decent name brand one and how the big guys are ripping everyone off with expensive machines.It is some what important that new guys get to see hack work and identify it as such, as well as see excellent examples of good work by others. Especially when hack work is a danger to the public like most of the vehicle work shown is. I also believe that it's important that new guys don't feel ashamed to post up their ugly work. They should not have to worry about getting bashed if they are trying to honestly learn. The only way to get better for many is to post up their work and ask for comments and help. Even the best have off days occasionally..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Something that I think is important is that in most cases there is too much welding going on.  Yes some of the beads are messy but from what I can see in the examples the beads could be half the length and still provide adequate strength if they were done properly.  I have to concede that it is a good thing that all the welds are complete seal welds providing more than enough of a connection.  Would I be happy to pay money for that work??  Nope!what's that red thing bolted to the axle?

Reply:I agree with sam in partial, theirs no point in bashing someone who is trying to do work to improve themselves and in most cases will adventually do so. ALTHOUGH doing it on your own and trying to learn whilst doing critical car/truck modifications where someones life is in any case on the line is not the correct way to go about things and is ILLEGAL and i think i can speak for all of us high pressure welders out there that were liable for our work, this includes car shops doing any sort of structural welding. Some forms of welding require you to have the mindset that you are infact preforming this welding procedure to prevent people from being hurt/killed. Example, i did a 4" schedule 160 auxillery steam line, which was going to be under 4000psi of superheated steam, every pass was tested before the cap, then a final xray, and 14 hour heat treatment process. Too be honest i would report this guy to the authorities not to get him in to trouble but just so he is informed

It certainly brings up ALOT of questions about the skills of  the student! Just how many classes has this student  taken?  If the instructor passed final welds like  that it raises ALOT of questions of  the instructors teaching skills. I am going to give them the benefit of doubt and say those pieces were for the  classes lab practice only. As said in previous replies above no automotive welding shop would or should allow such welds out of the liability they assume for the welds  failure and any resulting property or personal injury . I would  rather see welds like those of  Bruce TSCo-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.

Reply:PressureWelder.....I don't know where you are from.....or at..... but I have never seen anything about welding on a frame being illegal. I agree that the goofball is dangerous. I agree that he should not be in business. I agree that nobody should be paying him. But for real, I don't think it's illegal. If it was illegal, I have never seen a police officer stop the 75% of modified vehicles where I live. Almost everyone has a lifted 4x4 here. And I know of about 3 shops that install those lift kits here. Most are people I know. Most lift kits require some torching off existing brackets or welding new brackets onto the frame. I dunno. I just hate to see someone jump right to....They should be arrested!
