What is the best type of wood for trailer decking? My trailer is in a sad state of affairs and I need to re-deck it, I want it to last at least 10 years.
Reply:We've always used rough saw oak preferably. I would not use PT with as corrosive as the newer ACQ treated wood is..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:How long should I expect painting to last under hobby use hauling cars? The trailer is stored outdoors, I'm sure that will shorten the life some.

Reply:Prep will make a huge difference on paint life. I think we blasted and painted the 10 ton tagalong back prior to 2000 or so and they just repainted it this past year, mostly to change the color more than anything else. Stripped it bare, sand blasted everything to clean metal. Primed and then painted.  Redecked it when done. I don't even think we went crazy on the trailer with paint. IIRC it was simply rusty metal primer and 2 or 3 coats of red Rustoleum on the trailer. The truck itself got 2 part auto primer and paint. The prep on the old flatbed truck body and racks wasn't as good due to weather. We couldn't blast all of it and had to rush to get it primed to protect it before the rain came. I'd guess it took about 6-7 years before the rust started to show thru again on the areas we didn't blast or didn't blast well..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I don't know why it said painting lol... Damn auto correct. I am wrote how long would you expect the apitong to last vs oak. I need to retread what I write.

The old oil is free, and doesn't leave a slippery surface after it soaks in for a few days.  It naturally makes the wood water repellant, and if you use rough sawn oak, the wood will be very strong as well as having a skid resistant surface.
