Tonight I had to weld up some 1/2" HSLA100 plate about 8' long with a full bevel on one side. The fitters ground the living crap out of it and magnetized it big time. when I tried to weld the backside of the plate it spattered and spit like a mofo. Moving the ground around, changing the angle of the rod, nothing helped. I had to use 10718M 1/8" and that stuff likes to spatter a bit on its own. Old timers talk about smacking the plate with a big sledge hammer to de-magnetize the plate but I've never seen it done. There is also something electric that can be used but I've never seen that either. I wish there was an easy way to fix it.CERTIFICATIONS:7018M- H.V.O10718M- H.V.O11018M- H.V.O9N10- H.V.O71T-1-HYM- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0,035- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0.045- H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.035 H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.045 H.O.VER5554- H.O.V
Reply:an old timer TV-repair man would have a Degassing coil. They used to use them to demagnitize TV screens.Grandpa's got one, so they are out there.smacking it with a sledge has some merit as well. To prove it to yourself, try the following experiment:magnitize a screwdriver over a hand held magnet by pulling it across one face of the magnet in one direction 10 or 15 times. Now you should be able to pick up paperclips, small screws ect.now take that same screwdriver and set the butt of it it on a hard surface. concrete, steel, ect. then smack the tip of the screwdriver sharply with a hammer.usually that will kill all the magnetisim. sometimes you have to repeat the process.dragging it over the magnet lines the atoms up such that it is magnetised, smacking it jars them out of orientation, back to their natural state, and removes the magnetism.I should qualify this ... ive never tried it on steel, but i dont see why it wouldnt work. anyone have some magnetised steel and want to try it?[ame]http://www.amazon.com/Waldom-Degaussing-Coil-Color-Power/dp/B00011UYJU[/ame]according to this guy it works:http://www.blockemf.com/catalog/prod...oducts_id=5332Last edited by Meborder; 02-02-2012 at 07:48 AM.
Reply:Is there any way you can use an AC rod? That would fix things quick. If heating is OK you can heat it up till it hits the point where it loses its magnetism, it would be a lot of heat and the magnetism comes back when it cools down though. I would try beating it and see what happens, who knew you could beat the atoms out of alignment
Reply:AC rod is out of the question. I work on Navy Carriers and submarines so I have a very thin line of what I can and can't do. The hammer thing does make sense the more I think about it. I'll give it a try next time.CERTIFICATIONS:7018M- H.V.O10718M- H.V.O11018M- H.V.O9N10- H.V.O71T-1-HYM- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0,035- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0.045- H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.035 H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.045 H.O.VER5554- H.O.V
Reply:for pipe i wrap the ground lead around the pipe but in your case i would say your s.o.l. that is to small to do anything with just work the rod in the opposite direction of the bow and good luckLincoln Power Arc 4000 Thermal Arc Fabricator 252 iThermal arc 186Thermal Arc 26 tigTweeko 200 amp spool gunHobart AirForce 400WP-17V-12R |
