Had A Young Fella That I Work With Ask Me About Wideing Two Truck Rim's For Him - 15" X 7" - Wants To Take Them To 10" Wide - They Are Steel Rims - I Gave Him Several Reasons Why This Would Not Be A Wise Decision - Now I Know It Can Be Done - Fixed Some For Old Stock Car Years Ago - Big Differance Between Running In Circle And Flat Out On Highway -  Lot Of People Today Want To Blame The Guy That Put The Wiggle Pin In The Wobble Gear When It Comes Off - What Do You Think - Do It Or Let It Go
Reply:Just for liability sake, I wouldnt touch it. Especially since you can get 10"-12" steel wheels at a reasonable price. They still offer the old white spoke wagon wheel for $100 or less. Check with Summit Racing Equipment or Jeggs.
Reply:http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PCW-82-5185R3/ here is one for well less than $100. I couldnt and wouldnt do it that cheap.
Reply:He Said He Wanted To Keep The Factory Wheel Look
Reply:Right or wrong we use to do it a lot but it is alot of work it was alot more work than $100.00. You can buy wide stock looking rims for some things. That is they for?
Reply:If I had the idea and built them for my personal vehical then it would be me it fell back on. We did a lot of thnigs in the name of hotrod building that maybe wasnt the best thing to do. In todays society everyone is looking for someone else to blame. If I built them and they caused a wreck or were involved in a wreck then it would definitly come back on me. Thats why I wouldnt touch them. Not worth getting your name ruined over or worse. Just my opinion. There is tons of aftermarket suppliers that have factory wheels in all sizes.
Reply:I Think I'll Tell Him Monday - I'll Pass On This One - I Know He Was Trying To Save A Dollar On This Old Truck He's Fix'n Up - But Sometimes Saveing A Dollar Can Cost A Lot More - Thanks

Reply:Some of these things just don't work out for the average consumer who doesn't have a lot of money for custom labor. Just the way it is. You can't be doing things for free. If he could do it himself then he could save some money, but if he has to pay for somebody elses labor then production labor is cheaper than custom labor."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:Stockton wheel will still widen factory wheels.   They cut the centers out weld on a whole new outter hoop.    They do a great job, i looked into it about ten years ago and the prices seemed very reasonable for the work involvedVantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:A new guy at work had "Custom" aluminum wheels. One developed a crack, he asked about Welding it. I tried to explain the metal properties changing, then spinning at high centrifical forces. He stared at me and says, "Fine, I'll ask someone else".

Reply:look at wheel vintiques, they sell stock appearing steel wheels, built to order up to 14inches wide, corvette rallies, truck rallies and such..http://www.wheelvintiques.com/ steel wheels are relatively cheap, probably cheaper and safer to buy a set than modifying existing wheels..Last edited by brucer; 02-05-2012 at 02:57 PM.tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:Most guys will not weld rims but some guys will.My wifes old F150 had 2 of it's aluminum rims develop cracks several years back. Replacement cost was high and there are wheel remanufacturing facilities that repair these wheels by welding and remachining the wheels back to factory spec.I first tried welding the wheels myself. One wheel recracked in the same location after about a month, the other wheel lasted about 6 months and re cracked in the same location.I then purchased 2 reconditioned wheels from a reputable wheel remanufacturer. Both these wheels held up good and lasted. When we sold the truck a few years later the wheels were still as good as when we got them.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:I had a aluminum rim crack on my service truck.  The tire guy was like, why don't you just weld it up. Since your a welder! Um not only no, but hell no.  Just order me a new one.  That rim is still sitting in my shop to show people, that I won't even weld my own cracked aluminum rim.  So I sure as heck ain't going to weld yours.  I get at least one call per month asking the same damn thing.Lincoln 300 Vantage 2008300 Commander 1999SA250 1999SA200 1968Miller Syncrowave 200XMT350MPA/S-52E/xr-15Xtreme 12vs Millermatic 251 w/30A  Millermatic 251 Dialarc 250 Hypertherm 1250 GEKA & Bantom Ironwokers
Reply:This is a case of not knowing the difference between what I want, and what I can afford, bottom line he needs to buy a replacement, either new or used, may not be what he wants but the first thing is to be back on the road safe. If he really wants the factory wheel look he will have to find it and pay for it."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
