Hey im going to go look at a bunch of tanks from Acetylene and oxygen to Helium and argon. im wonting to trade them in at my local oxarc store to get filled, what makes a tank obcelete (sp?) and cant be filled/traded? any help would be great  Thanks
Reply:There are a few tanks that DOT has determined to be nolonger safe to fill, old alum alloys from the 70's that I know of. Walter Kidde made a lot of these alum tanks and not just for extingusers. I can not remember the alloy but they were very limited and I wouldn't worry much about them. The big things that will cause them to be rejected are obvious damage, like big gauges in the side walls or signs they have been welded. Also if they show evidence of being in or very near a fire. Some tanks will also be rejected if they have beeen repainted, usually alum tanks. If the tank is out of hydro some places will not trade it, most will charge you $25+ for the hydro and swap the tank. Take a quick look at the top of the cylinder. There will be a date stamp for the hydro. It will be a number X followed by a symbol or 4 small number in a square, followed by 2 numbers XX (year tested), posibly followed by a + and a star. It may look like this say 3#04+ This would have been hydroed in march of 2004 and be good till march of 2009 (good hydro) if it had a star after it it would be good till 2014 (10 year test).Hope this helps.
Reply:You need to look at the hydrostatic test date on the cylinders. If they are out of date most LWS's will charge you for a restest, (we charge $35.00) Most cylinders get tested every 5 years, if they are newer cylinders you can go every 10. Some LWS companies will not accept cylinders that do not have their name on them, to us it does not matter, as long as the guys tells us he owns the cylinder, we'll swap it for one of ours, one other note, it must have a label on it communicating it's content's. I've had several people bring in cylinders before without a label, and had to turn them away, the fines to our company for transporting a cylinder without a label are pretty steep, It's not as simple as just slapping a label on it, and sending it down the road, if we did put our label with our name on it, we assume responsibilty for whatever may be in that cylinder. The laws governing our industry have tightened a great deal since Sept 11, 2001, with the department of Homeland Security leading the way with several new rules and regs.
Reply:Thanks guys, i was told to by a friend of mine that if they have any stamping  under the coned part its no good?
