Hi guys im new so go easy. I just purchased an almost new Miller XMT 304 CC (Not CC/CV) machine. I didnt realize it when i purchased it but I think I may have bought the wrong machine. I want to be able to MIG and TIG mostly. I am affraid that the CC machine wont allow for a good MIG process. I still need to buy a wire feeder, any ideas? What I want to do:1. MIG steel - no spool gun wanted just a standard wire feeder.2. TIG steel and Aluminum.HELP!by the way I paid 1900 for it and it doesnt have a scratch on it.Thanks,Frank
Reply:Are you sure it is a CC only machine ? For what you are wanting to do youd have been better of with the cc/cv model.....with all you will need to do MIG and TIG with HF you will be into enough $ to have bought two seperate machines......do you need the 400 AMPS of the 304 or was this just a "wow I have to get it for that price"
Reply:Here is your machine.  http://www.millerwelds.com/products/...xmt_304_cc_cv/They do not show a XMT 304 in CC only.  It is DC only which pretty much rules out Tig aluminum.  The machine above is a multiprocess.  Tig, Mig, stick and carbon arc up to 1/4 electrode.Davidedit:  I found this in owners manuals, they list no CC only model.http://www.millerwelds.com/om/o2208al_mil.pdfLast edited by David R; 04-20-2008 at 07:26 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Looks like your answer is right on the front panel....look at the modes....stick and TIG....yes you can MIG from a CC machine but by the time you buy a feeder for it you will still not be able to TIG al with it......

Reply:There is indeed a cc only model of the xmt304 though mikes link has nothing to do with it. You can use that power supply for any voltage sensing feeder such as a hefty or ln25 (there are others though). You can get acceptable fcaw welds using cc though there is considerable more spatter. I haven't tried it for gmaw so I can't say how it will perform. Aluminum can be welded with dc tig and no hf, the arc must be started using scratch start or lift start. Ac is preferred because the arc has a self-cleaning action, but dc works well for it especially on thicker material. To use the feeder simply set your machine to stick mode (soft arc will probably give you the best results but you will need to experiment to find out where it welds best at).Not too bad on the price but I gave about 300 less for my cc/cv model with a one year warranty. It is a 400 amp machine but they aren't really usable amps especially on single phase power as it cuts duty cycle quite a bit.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:Not sure why the owners manual didn't come up.....here is a link you can scroll down and see that yes there is a cc only 304......http://www.millerwelds.com/service/ownersmanuals.php
Reply:Thanks guys maybe someone wants to buy mine... I feel stupid. I should have checked!!
Reply:What do I need for tig welding? Do I need a controller or straight hook-up to the XMT? What is a good air cooled torch? How do I control the gas flow with the torch, ie turning it on and off, solonoid? Thanks guys
Reply:Humm - very interesting.  In this forum where asking for help the welder cost:"by the way I paid 1900 for it and it doesnt have a scratch on it."And now in the "For Sale" forum it's a slightly different figure:"I paid 3450 ish with tax at sims welding"  Must have been some high taxes or a big ish...
Reply:I saw the pictures and price of the machine and it does say XMT304CC.http://cgi.ebay.com/Lincoln-invertec...QQcmdZViewItemMig, Touch Start Tig and stickDavidLast edited by David R; 04-21-2008 at 07:18 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:In reply to the post above, you can most certainly weld aluminum with DCSP.  In fact, you'll get cleaner welds and a better looking bead.  I only use DCSP for welding aluminum.  Get a bottle of 75He/25Ar and you'll get great arc starts.  No need to ball the tungsten, sharpen as usual.  For some of the newer high frequency inverter models, you'll actually get a better weld using straight argon.I r 2 a perfessional
Reply:Miller built two models of the XMT 304, CC and CC/CV. Except for the front panel, they look alike. They discontinued the CC model about two years ago. weldersales
