Okay, did not get a chance to gather everything together for the picture, but I have a small winch that is my dads, you will see it was designed to hook onto a plate then be hung from the ball of a hitch to pull things, I will have to check, but I believe they claim a 6000lbs level pull with it, my dad bought it from Costco.Anyway I have some scrap steel and came up with a 1/2" steel plate about 4 3/4" wide by 12" long, and as the flat part of the winch base is only 4"x2" I figure to weld this plate to a 2" heavy wall square tube so I can mount in either front or back on my truck for the odd time I would need to use it.So my idea is to drill and tap the plate and use grade "8" bolts that I turned  the heads down to match what the factory screwed into their thin plate to slide the winch onto it, or I might use cheesehead bolts we use at work that already have a round head on and then use the two 3/8" bolts they say to use to bolt the winch to the plate so it won't slide off. Then I would be able to move it from front to back and it would be more solid than hanging off the bracket with the keyhole on from a trailer ball.So would this be a good idea?I have a 70's Craftsman 180 Amp A/C Buzz box on 220v that I would use to weld it with, Is there a rod you would use over another? What thickness rod and what amperage would you think I should weld at?
Reply:So if I understand you right you just want to make a plate  on a tube for the winch that slides in to the 2" reciever like a ball mount. Thats definately do able. With your machine, I would run 1/8" 7018AC probably myself or 7014. For you, I'd suggest the 7014 as it sounds like you don't have all that much experience with welding. It's an easier rod for beginners to run and you'll get pretty much the same results in this aplication. 7024 would also be a good choice for a beginner, but all the welds would need to be done flat as it's not a rod to run vert or overhead.7014 1/8" on AC usually runs 110-160 amps. Each machine runs a bit different so usually I set it near the middle and then run a practice piece to check the setting and adjust from there. One thing, if you are not good at welding I'd run at least one decent sized bolt thru both the plate and one side of the tube as a backup. 6000lbs in tension is nothing to take lightly. If something lets go it will get ugly fast. If your welds are fairly good you should have plenty of weld to handle the load, but not knowing your skills I'd be safe than sorry..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Okay, thanks, took welding over 35 years ago and can count on two hands how much I have done in the last 35 years, so am not a beginner, but no where near an experienced welder, so that is why I am asking, appreciate the feed back.thanks for the ideas.
Reply:Okay, photobucket is working now, could not post this pic before, this is the welder I have at my disposal.
Reply:Actually a nicer unit than my 1st stick machine. Mine was one of the old tapped Craftsmans that you had to change the plugs to set the aproximate amps. It should do fine for what you want to do..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:So finally was able to post some pics of the winch I want to make the mount for, it says on it good for 6000Lbs level load, hard to believe when you see winches rated at 3500lbs that are much bigger and meant for permanent mounts.Bottom picture shows the small base it has and pretty thin metal for a base.

Reply:So here it finally is, not finished, but you will get the idea of how it goes now.
Reply:weld in the last pic looks cold to me.
Reply:I was not impressed with my welding along the tube and the plate, I am no welder by any means, been 35 plus years since I took any welding class, but used to practise the odd time, but last time I welded anything must be over 6 or so years ago, but I thought I would have been better than I was. Will do some more on it and see how they turn out.
Reply:Now that you have gotten your feet wet again after such a long hyatis, watch that the weldbead is wetted out along both pieces to be joined. I have them pointed out in the attached pic. Another thing, that plate and tube need preheating for best results. They are too thick and cold for good penetration. A MAPP gas or propane torch will do just fine to bring that up to operating temps. Heat it all up nice and even. Above 75 degrees f. is bare minimum, but 150 degrees is better. This is one project that has got to be right, good luck!  Attached ImagesCity of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Reply:Thanks, in the past when I was thinking of welding say cast iron I thought sticking the items on a hot plate and using it for heat, or I have a side burner from a BBQ I thought might work well for heating things up, or now that I think of it, I have at least one stove and oven from an old RV that might work too.

Reply:Your welding looks good enough for what you want it to do. Two cautions for using it. If it's going to used on a 4wd, do not pull on the cable w/ the p/u, it will more than likely break the cable. And keep an old piece of carpet or heavy throw rug handy to drape over the middle of cable while pulling, if the cable breaks it will hopefully absorb the recoil saving someone from injury.                             MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:looks good dont think id trust that winchwith 4000lb i made a mount for my 8500winch Attached Images
Reply:Ed Mac, I'm just curious. Did you run welder lead from the p/u battery to the winch for power? I see the breakaway batt box on the trailer.                     Just wondering,                                           MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:Thanks guys, I do know about something to try refrain the cable, but the hood up is a good idea. I did see the same basic winch at Home Depot and it is clearly marked 2000LBS, so obviously this one is claiming 6000, so that must be the last wrap and on a dead even low friction surface, although they do show it only for pulling things towards you, not for actually pulling a vehicle out, and really I will only use it for pulling things, I would get a real winch if I actually need to go offroad.I would hope it might give a nudge in an emergency if really needed.
Reply:That's why I have the 2000 lb winch on the front of my wheeler to get me or someone else out of a jam. When I lived up north I took the cable off in the winter and fastened a 3/4" nylon dog leash on the drum to operate my snow plow. Works a lot better than cable.                                MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
