G'day, I'm going to build a Barstool racer chassis from 25 x 25 x 3mm RHS or In american terms 1" x 1" x 1/8" box section, it will all be TIG welded, I just need to know a few things such as -1. Should I bevel the peices?2. What size tungsten should I use? I mucked around with a 2.4 (3/32) and it seemed good3. what size filler rod4. What amperage?.I will also be welding the bearing hangers on using TIG, it will be a fillet weld so how big should I have for a root face and root gap?, should I lay a single bead or a 3 run two layer?.Thanks, Matti.
Reply:Semibevel if you even bother with one2.42.4100ampsI wouldn't be welding the bearing housing on, weld a plate on and bolt the housing to that.I'd rather be hunting........USE ENOUGH HEAT.......Drifting around Aussie welding more pipe up, for something different.....wanting to get home.
Reply:Bearing hanger, not bearing housing. The hanger is the thing the housings bolt too.

Reply:A tee joint doesn't need a bevel, 2 sides are a sharp fillet; no bevel necessary. The other 2 sides have a natural 'bevel', the rounded edges of the tubing.Get a flap disk for your 4 1/2" grinder and clean off the mill scale. TIG does NOT like mill scale. If your bead is full of holes, it's the mill scale. 9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Hobby weldor with a little training. Craftsman O/A---Flat, Vert, Ovhd, Horz. Reply:Thanks Craig, I know about the mill scale and all of that but with regards to the hangers I am placing them in the middle of the tubing so I won't have that rounded tubing edge, I thought I would have to bevel them to get full penetration. Should I run a stringer bead of a two layer three pass weld?.

Reply:No need to run a fillet gap with TIG.  Run a single pass with a weave, no stringers, should do you fine.I r 2 a perfessional
Reply:A buddy had one, it was powered by a small 4 stroke; no HP. It went 5 mph, maybe. The things are 3 foot square and 3 foot tall. Since they have NO stability anyway, the welds don't much matter. HOWEVER, if you're HP knutz, and are going to do something male; I decline to participate."Or are you referring to the 1/8" because you normally get full fusion because it is not so thick?"Yes, 1/8". I'm only talking about a 5 mph, 3 foot tall, 'fun TOY'. I'm unqualified to comment on 1/4"; see my first comment. Actually I'm unqualified to comment on 1/8". Hopefully, someone will comment on the 1/4"."I will also be welding the bearing hangers on using TIG, it will be a fillet weld so how big should I have for a root face and root gap?, should I lay a single bead or a 3 run two layer?"kbnit answered the root gap question. How thick are the bearing hangers? If they're 1/4", I'd use 1/8" filler, both sides, no bevel. This is only if you're running thru the pits to buy everyone hotdogs; not something serious. This would be a good time to read my sig. Last edited by Craig in Denver; 04-26-2008 at 01:20 AM.9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Hobby weldor with a little training.
