I was at a flea market today and scored a 1 1/4HP Hobart Squirell cage motor for $15It was a industrial sink garbage disposer and had the grinder assembly still attached.took a while to get the stuck cast part off and I knew being wet and dry alot, it would be tought to get the grinder off the shaft. sorry for the low quality photos (cell) i did cut the really rusted part down flush to grind the really thin nut back to a non stripped state but no go. being this is an induction motor, would it be damaged if i welded somthing to the nut or grinder for leverage to remove it. I'm open to ideas on how to free the nice motor from the garbage disposer shell. I'll have alot of free time the next few days once I get Iced and Snowed in tonight. also scored another microwave for $7.50 to beef up my other microwelder.Realgear 140 MIGMore DeWalt tools that I prolly needDIY 160 amp 40 OCV MOT Stick Welder
Reply:Hard to see. Weld a big nut or old socket to it and use an impact wrench.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:As long as you ground right to the rotor and don't let the current pass thru the motor bearings, you'll be fine. MikeOl' Stonebreaker "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:it goes both directions, and its a dual voltage.I did get it off, but the auger itself was still stuff so i improved a flywheel puller rig to pop it off of there.it does run very well but its one noisy sob. i have it wired for 110v . i think its a loose bering causing the niose. seems to be amplified thru the cast iron housing. other than a higher pitched sound when its running (along with the alleged bering sound ) it seems to run greatI dont have a clue what i'll do with it yet but at $15 i couldnt resist.Realgear 140 MIGMore DeWalt tools that I prolly needDIY 160 amp 40 OCV MOT Stick Welder
Reply:I've pulled a couple 'disposals' apart and have found that leakage of seals or corrosion of zinc castings is the usual mode of failure; both can lead to failure of the upper bearings. Some of those are split phase, the better are capacitor start, induction run. $15 seems a bit steep for a used/bad one, to me. Not the easiest type to put back into use powering something else.
Reply:like ive said, i live to mess with odds and ends. it is a cap start. i ran across that while exploring the motor.Realgear 140 MIGMore DeWalt tools that I prolly needDIY 160 amp 40 OCV MOT Stick Welder
Reply:metalpool,I have heated nuts and bolts just enough that they would melt paraffin wax and allow the wax to run into the threads. This flushes out rust and lubricates the threads to the point the bolt and nut will usually come apart with ease (better than ANY oil). Remove the nut while the wax is still in a liquid state. Just be careful not to heat too much as you could damage the seal in the moter. Have a great weekend,Jerel
Reply:seal aint imposrtant to me. Ive got a neighbor with a cnc who might make me a custom end housing and new bering for it to make it universal in exchange for some web design. so its going on the back burner til then.on the bright side, the microwelder upgrade is complete. got carried away and painted my helmet too.Realgear 140 MIGMore DeWalt tools that I prolly needDIY 160 amp 40 OCV MOT Stick Welder
Reply:heres the schematic on the 110v wiring version. i also drew a circuit for 220v input.on 110, I'd say 5/32 rods are its limits 1/8 rods were sticking alot.i ran tests on it with 3/32 7014 AC rods and was able to burn thru 16 guage and achieve full penetration on 1/8" mild steel.i'm very new to stick so i'll post some practice pics later. i really had to shove in the 3/32 to keep it going but burned thru an entire rod without the arc droping outRealgear 140 MIGMore DeWalt tools that I prolly needDIY 160 amp 40 OCV MOT Stick Welder |
