Hi guys, I posted re: my undercutting probs with my fillet several weeks ago. I'm just reposting how I'm doing with my recent practice.  With the knowledge I've got from you guys, I made some great improvement...  I did clean my metal this time   It' not perfect yet but miles better than my initial practices.  I even tried some lap joints this time with more visually appealing results...  less undercutting.  Thanks guys!  I'll still be practicing.... here you go!_______Miller Maxstar 150 STLLincoln ProMig 140Hobart Handler 210
Reply:My "personal" opinion...  Move slower and dip about 3 times a second.  Maybe a little more heat and you will have it.  Looking good form the last pics...Just take your time and dip away.. remember you are filling the joint, so fillet.I have attached a photo of a double pass I did on some 1/2" flat to 2" x 2" 1/4" MS tubing for the bender...  The weld was done horizontal.  I used a 1/8" tung with 3/32" 70S-2 filler.  The first pass looked even better than this one.  I think it has something to do with going over the previous pass because it was filler and not as much original steel. Reply:Thanks Malich!  Still working on it.   Looks like you're progressing well on your gottrikes bender.  I finally got my drill bit from HF.  They're 29.99 for the set but looks pretty good.  I sure hope it last the life of the build.  Thanks for the tips!!_______Miller Maxstar 150 STLLincoln ProMig 140Hobart Handler 210
Reply:Hey Storm,I got my bender finished last week and I did my first bend today because I needed to get the grade 8 bolts in.  Go to the welding projects section of this forum and I have several photos of the build. If you need any help or have questions let me know I ran into a few small problems but got passed them easily.   I have a few more photos if you need them, just mock up stuff to be sure fit was good.As for the drill bits, they will last the life of the build and more if you use some cutting oil on  them and run a slow speed.  I use the slowest speed my drill press had about 200 RPM.  I used a product called "cool tool", it is just an oil made for drilling and tapping threads. The bits survived and I did not see a decrease in cutting during the drilling process.  Just keep them oiled and do not use excessive pressure, let the bit do the work for you.Have fun!Last edited by malich; 05-09-2008 at 07:57 PM.Build a Barstool Racer at BarFlyRacers.com!
