Hey all, first post!I just bought a car and would like to "tweak" the stock exhaust a bit. The stock exhaust is stainless steel. Basically what I am looking to do is cut out the resonators and fab an x-pipe, and also swap out the mufflers for something a bit louder.I have two questions:1. If I were to use stainless tubing and mufflers and MIG weld it out with er70s-6, how would it hold up with all the heat-cycles an exhaust sees?2. Similar question to above, but what if I were to use mild steel tubing and mufflers welded to the stainless?If I'm asking a moronic question, please set me sraight! haha. But, if the above is not a good idea, is there a stainless MIG wire to use?Really appreciate the help!
Reply:It's a common question, so don't feel bad about asking it. The simple answer is yes, it will weld up fine. The weld will be strong. The only drawback is the weld will not be rust proof. But really, it will last for years with no ill affects.And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:Stainless to Steel is common and is welded with ER309L (Best) or anything else you have that that welds good for you. JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases. There all here. :
Reply:Thank you for the quick response, very much appreciated!I was thinking that in this application it may be an issue, but you have given me reassurance. I think I will go with the mild steel exhaust tubing and mufflers, it will save me a bit of money.
