1- I needed a quick easy way to mount a spare tire on my work trailer. Luckily the spare tire on my junk Jeep I use for parts fit the lug pattern so I didn't have to buy a tire.(Photo 1 & 2)2- All I used was a short piece of 2” pipe, a 2” cap, an 11” piece of angle iron, a few stainless steel nuts and bolts and a 12” piece of scrap for a handle. (Photo 3)3- I used a 2” cap because it came close to fitting the size of the center hole in the tire rim and would help keep it centered. I had to cut a hole in the cap to weld in a ½ S.S. Nut for the handle. (Photo 4)4- After grinding it smooth, I ran a ½ tap to clean out the threads (Photo 5)5-  Also had to grind a flat spot on the side of the pipe to get a better fit with the angle iron. (Photo 6)6- After welding it up and a coat of primer and paint. I used S.S. Hardware to mount it.(Photo 7)7- Here it is all ready to go. The only other thing you will need is a large disk of some sort to hold the tire down with the handle. Also if you use a hollow handle like I did, drill a weep hole so the water can get out.(photo 8 & 9) Attached ImagesI'm not a Engineer, I just play one on the weekend.

Reply:Pretty nice job.But if you welded something to close off the hollow handle, then it won't trap water or bugs.  Also, note that a P-metric radial vehicle tire won't handle the same as a 'real' trailer tire.  If the trailer already has that size and type tire, then OK.  But watch out if the trailer has a tire that is not a P215/75-R15 like the new spare.  Mismatched tires are not good.    The best laid schemes ... Reply:Yea, Good point. I didn't give much thought to that. But I had no spare at all, and I sure as heck didn't want to have to leave my stuff on the side of the road while I went to get a tire fixed. Which will most likely be on a Sunday afternoon.I'm not a Engineer, I just play one on the weekend.
Reply:Simple and functional.  Nice job.   Might consider throwing a bike chain and lock on it so it doesn't 'walk off'.A Michelin spare?  The trailer tires will be jealous now and sure to blow out.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Duaneb55 and I must think alike because I thought of making that lockable once I saw it. Reply:That is a nice lookin' job, should hold up well w/ the tongue taking the weight of the tire and wheel. If the safety chain is long enough, weld a 5/16" chain link to each end of the handle as filler to close in the handle ends. Then lock the chain to the handle short enough so it can't be turned. I wouldn't think you'd need to lock up the spare while the tlr is hitched to vehicle. If the area you're in is that bad, then tighten the spare down super snug and run a short chain thru the wheel spokes to the handle. I doubt they'd be able to turn the tire pulled down tight against the tongue.                           MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
