These are just a couple of pics from my current activity at my construction site. Not much to look at but as a weldor, I thought it was time to post a pic no matter how trivial. These are 1" x 2 1/2" carbon steel tubes that are being used for door hinges. The doors are 10' x 12' and weigh approx. 1800 lbs. each. They cover up the tubesheets in the baghouse we're building at this power house. The tubes are for "L" shaped threaded rod that goes through the door flanges which then get a nut and washer to tighten down the door. I have a pic of the tube tacked in place before wirebrushing and preheating, and the weld was done in one pass, using ESAB E7018 H4R 1/8 at 125 amps on a Lincoln InverTec 350 Pro. Reply:Where you working? Nice beed. Some of the best welders I have seen are boilermakers. When I worked for them as a permit hand I knew my welds were good when the old time boilermaker foreman walked by some of my work and said wow who welded these these look great. I said  I had. His response was wow you weld like a boilermaker even though your an ironworker...hahaGood stuff.'Mike
Reply:Thanks Ironman, I'm currently in Jersey City. One thing about this craft, always needing some good weldors. Good job on your compliment from the BM foreman. Keep up the good work and stay safe brother!JeremyMiller XMT-3502 Lincoln Power Mig 140C (One w/ dedicated spoolgun)Jackson NexGen / Miller Digital EliteMiller S32P SuperWeldcraft 17fv & 9fv Tig TorchVictor & Purox O/ALincoln Ranger 9Fairly Cold Beer!!
Reply:How is NJ treating you? And those beads to look damned nice. Makes me jealous to the crap that I throw down on a plate. But years of experience do make all the difference...The world is amazing when you are slightly strange.
Reply:Hey Sinister, Thanks for the compliments! All it takes is practice and you'll get it. NJ is like my second home. Between here and NYC, I'm up in this area almost as much as I'm home! Works starting to get a little scarce so it looks like I'll be going back to Ohio in about a month or two. Which part of NJ are you in?JeremyMiller XMT-3502 Lincoln Power Mig 140C (One w/ dedicated spoolgun)Jackson NexGen / Miller Digital EliteMiller S32P SuperWeldcraft 17fv & 9fv Tig TorchVictor & Purox O/ALincoln Ranger 9Fairly Cold Beer!!
Reply:Outside of Morristown right now, but I was born and raised in Secaucus. My maternal Grandmother lived in Jersey City her whole life so I spent a decent chunk of my childhood there. I believe she lived in the Lafayette section, but I have fond memories of Journal Square and Newport Center and such.I love this state, but I hate the Job outlook. And I personally don't think Christie is going to be any better for our state than Corzine was. As it stands now, my welding isn't crappy, especially for only having done it for 6 months. Is it perfect? Of course not. I'll see if I can snag some pics at school tomorrow (if the weather holds). Right now I'm in the "Open Root" portion of the SMAW section, so it's not ultra impressive, but my D1.1 2G 3G 4G plates all passes and they looked pretty.I'm hoping that I can apply for a few of the Locals around here when I get out, but I'd take anything I can get at this point. The world is amazing when you are slightly strange.
Reply:As far as the unions go, I couldn't agree more on Christie. He is strongly opposing them. I am working at the PSEG Hudson Generating Station and staying in a hotel here in Elizabeth. If your plates passed, then you're already on the upward path. You've obviously gotten way past the basics and once your at that point, all there is now is to improve yourself to your satisfaction. Ask any weldor. 40+ year weldors still tell me they are practicing everytime they strike an arc. All you can do is continue to get better. I've welded for a little over 9 years, and still learning all the time.Let's hope things work out for the future work outlook, for the both of us and any other tradesman that is all to familiar with the decline in jobs. Reply:An extra pic from my previous post. This is what the completed tube looks like for the door hardware. The "L" shaped threaded rod with the back stop to the right of it to prevent the pin from coming out. Once the door is installed, the pin is set upright and sets in between two tabs. It then gets a washer and nut to secure the door down. Primitive design but it's what the prints called for and all hardware is prefabbed. Not much to look at, but thought I'd add this in case my first post was a little hard to follow (I'm sometimes bad at explaining things ).I also apologize for the rough photography. All these pics were taken with my iPhone. Reply:I'm trying to picture it, are the doors perpendicular to the baseplate the hinge is welded on straight up in the air? Or is that baseplate supposed to sit upright and the doors would swing a bit like saloon doors? The world is amazing when you are slightly strange.
Reply:Actually, they are called doors, but are really removable covers. They cover each individual cell and if they need to be removed, they don't actually "swing open", they get lifted off with a crane. We have a couple of them set to mark the locations of the hinge tubes. I'll get a pic of one that is set tomorrow which will illustrate where they go better than I can explain...Miller XMT-3502 Lincoln Power Mig 140C (One w/ dedicated spoolgun)Jackson NexGen / Miller Digital EliteMiller S32P SuperWeldcraft 17fv & 9fv Tig TorchVictor & Purox O/ALincoln Ranger 9Fairly Cold Beer!!

Reply:Nice looking welds! They better be for a boilermaker! LOL! Keep the pics coming of the job, be careful with phone on the jobsite, clients and contractors frown on seeing them but I'm sure you're aware of that. I think the job you're on is same one a few Boston BM's are on? Dead in this area right now.SinisterDexterIf you're interested in the boilermakers apprenticeship go to www.boilermakers.org to get you started.Tennessee Squire Association
Reply:/\ '67 Cutlass/442 in the avatar? Got one myself that gets me down our local 1/4 mile. Anyway, cheer's to the Boilermakers, my dad was one for 35 years but we just recently lost him to mesothelioma (lung cancer from asbestos). My mom is a big spokes person for this cancer and she even has a national tv comercial with pics of dad and our family, some of you may have even seen it. Nice looking welds btw.
