I am trying to figure out the amperage of the 220 circuit in my garage. When I look at it in the breaker box, there are two 30-amp breakers with one long plastic piece connecting them (the part that you switch it on and off with). Is this a 60-amp circuit or 30-amp circuit?

Reply:Check the wiring gauge and IF this is for a welder ONLY circuit the wiring may meet code for the code exception granted for welding equiment and you can just add a 60 amp breaker. If not, and the panel is in the garage, its easy enough to install a new circuit run with the proper wire gauge and breaker. Reply:WyoRoy, unfortunately, the breaker box is on the other side of the house. This circuit has been sufficient for my Hobart 187 and 50 amp plasma cutter. I am saving for a metal building to use for tractor storage and welding shop. So, I think I am going to wait until I get this building and install a 100 amp circuit out there, as I really would like to have the capacity for an old transformer based 250-300amp stick welder. I will have an electrician wire this shop though. Thanks for
Reply:Morgaj, just curious, is your breaker box a Federal Pacific by chance and what size wire is going to the garage? Reason I ask is that this breaker is handling your existing load and not tripping. Bob |
