Guys as some of you know stick welding is my main deal, but I have been changing up one of my mig machines in the shop, and not sure something is exactly right. I have been running 75/25 on all my migs, well I decided to set one up with 92/8 so I can get into a spray. Well Basically I'm not real happy with what I have gotten. Pretty much takes 2 more volts to achieve the same weld I had with the 75/25, and goes into globular at 22 Volts. Full spray is not reached until 25.5V I' using .035 wire. (Was planning on going to .045 but wanted to sue the rest of this spool of .035 first) What voltage should I be starting to go into a spray ? I'm wondering if the gas isn't mixed properly. Any info on any of this is greatly appreciated.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:Hammack,Don't think you're far off. Miller's GMAW handbook calls for 24-30V at 165-300A and a WS of 340-625 ipm. That's using a 98% Argon, 2% O2 mix. Reply:I use 92/8 a lot. For short circuit, it doesn't get the penetration of C/25. To go into spray, I need to be around 30 volts with a minimum of 155 amps. for .035 wire, that means at least 300 ipm. Try 500 or 600 ipm and 30 volts. You will like it. I have a hard time controlling spray and its easy to get porosity. If you can adjust the inductance, it will help with short arc. For true spray I set the wire speed, then adjust the volts so the arc just stops crackling.The ESAB data sheet is probably for 98/2 which sprays at a little lower voltage. Basically 98/2 just runs hotter than the 92/8 in spray or pulsed spray.To spray with .045, you are going to need some big balls (volts) and lots of heat protection. Keep an eye on the mig gun, they burn up easily. It helps to keep the end of the contact tip inside the gas cone by about 1/8". It won't burn up as fast. Also I use one size bigger contact tip because the wire preheats and expands inside the "right" size tip and binds up. You can feel it in the mig gun while welding.
