mig welding on galvanized steel question...

Hi all,   Just wondering if anyone out there has specific experience with welding galvanized steel with the lower silicone version er70s-3 wire?  I've read it was designed to combat cracking, but wondering if it helps out with porosity and pin holes as well, compared to using er70s-2...  Does it weld any better?  Thanks, mjj

Reply:I have welded a LOT of galvanized with MIG.  GRIND THE STUFF OFF before you weld.  No spatter, no fumes, no problems.  Use what ever wire you want.  The fumes can kill ya if you don't grind it off and breathe it.  I did a job once and breathed way too much of the white smoke.  Was sicker than a dog for 2 days.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Drink milk, it is the antidote for zinc poisoning. I have used NR211-MP on galv with excellent results and no grinding involved. There is actually a flux cored wire out now specifically for welding galv without grinding. I believe ESAB makes it, but not positive.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:All I have guys is a Tig Welder.  185 amp Electronic unit.  Nice machine and I do a ton of tig welding and seem very proficient.  But this Galvanized beam is kicking my ..... .  Yes, I have ground off the galvanization back to an inch away from where I'm welding.  But I need to know why I'm getting all the splattering and lousy weld?  Got any ideas?  Gas pressure too low or high?  Contaminations?  Metal is not clean of galvananization process?

Reply:Hi, I MIG weld Galvanised steel everyday and I can say from experiance.1.wear a respirator, a leather jacket, and something to cover your head or you will get some nasty burns.2. The low silicon wire should be good and you should have less problems with the molten pool exploding, we use ER70s-6... :S3. Get your settings spot on, if it is too hot it will draw the zinc into the molten pool and you will get more explosions, the closer you get to the sweet spot the less fumes and less spatter and explosions.Anything elce?.
