Junk yards send pull outs to repair so they can sell. Busted in wreck or in removal? Grind out cracks preheat, weld, then postheat. Used weed torch for heat. Don't be tempted to spot heat (red box) heat front to back (green box). Could have removed bell and put in oven but this was faster (cheaper).Held torch on for about 8 sec. Waited about 2 min heated for 8 sec then started welding. welded about 4-5" then heated for 5 sec, repeated untill finished welds. Heated  for about 5 sec for post heat. Checked with IR thermometer, the area ranged from 290 to 310 degrees.Ground with flapwheel then used needle scaled to blend.TIG, 4043 filler. Attached Images

Reply:what junk yard is this that you speak of so I never go there, altough I would if it was your welding all the time ... nice work, just seems a little dis honest if they don't disclose that the case was welded"Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal"   -Henry Ford

Reply:What would cause a case to crack like that?  Something blowing apart inside?
Reply:nice work castweld! i also use a needle scaler when doing cast repairs, not only blends a repair so that you can hardly tell there ever was a crack, but also relieves the stress as well! i use my scaler on a daily basis, i think its a must have tool for all weldors! again, nice job.  rob.millermatic 200 millermatic 150miller bluestar 2Epurox / oxweld O/A

Reply:If that is the extent of the junkyards trickery they have very lucky customers, I always perfer the pick your part junkyards. Ifigured I was more likely to get a good part that way. Unfortunantly I no longer live near one.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
Reply:do you check the bellhousing flange for flatness after welding? We tigged up a Tremec for a local buddy (who bought it cracked & cheap)...and after welding, we had (considerably) more time in filing the case flat & square with the input shaft than in the welding.and it's holding up fine after more than a year behind a boosted 302very nice welding...though I might have some reservations about it being a "legitimate" repair if the bellhousing/mating flange is distorted (or not checked at all)Millermatic 251Syncro 200
Reply:If Peter welded one  of the junkyard parts I've purchased over the years, I'd feel pretty damn lucky.
