I just got this mini keg I plan on using for a fuel tank on my barstool racer and I was wondering if anyone has made a tank from them before?I got them from Midwest. I called them and they told me there were made of TIN. Now I am no metal expert, but what is the difference between tin and steel? How about TIG welding it?There appears to be some kind of coating inside and I am not sure if it is resistant to gasoline and it most likely will pull through when welded and mess of the puddle. So, what do I use to remove it? And then I should re-coat the tank when done to help seal.Anyone got some ideas for me here? Thanks in advance! Reply:Good question, you need to find out what the keg is "really" made of.  Midwest says "electrolytically treated tin-plate, The inside has gold lacquering protection", and I'm guessing that is tin plated steel with a lacquer inside, both coatings will be destroyed by welding, and probably interfere with getting a nice clean weld.Wikipedia suggests some mini-kegs may be alumiunum, if so, maybe that's a better weldable solution for you.The best solution may be a Stainless Steel "soda syrup" keg.  You can find them in 3 gallons although these are rare, but the 5 gallon kegs are common from many brewing supplies and you could cut this down to the size you want if you are very clever.
Reply:The car in my sig has a freon tank for a fuel cell...Been there since 1980!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:That mini keg is mild steel, real thin.  I have a couple.I would solder a fitting to it.  It would be easy to burn through with anything else.  Maybe tig starting at a few amps.  You could measure the thickness and use the 1 amp for each .001 rule.Gasoline will probably eat the plastic valve and cork of your minikeg. You might have to solder or weld some plate over them to get it to hold gas.  If you make one and it leaks, toss it, you have to empty a fresh one so it has NO GAS residue and start over. I had a 1946 willys jeep with a 1/2 keg for a fuel tank.  I drilled and tapped the outlet and used some kind of epoxy to hold a snowmobile filler and gauge over the bung hole.  My dad and I had a made the roll bars with a pipe bender.  I put a ford 200 six in it and overdrive.     Thanks for the memory.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Before you put gas in it test for leaks with water. That way you can drain it and patch it and not have it go boom on you. I don't think I would try low pressure air on anything that thin, but all you would need is about 5 psi and some soapy water. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:I just got one of those mini kegs too, they are selling 1919 root beer in them up here. Here I thought it was stainless all this time. -Dan

Reply:If I try to TIG it, should I attempt to grind off the TIN coating? If I solder it, can that be done with a propane torch?  If so, what type of solder can I use?  I have soldered copper pipe in the past so I am not sure if this is the same method.  I do not have a O/A torch. Thanks!Build a Barstool Racer at BarFlyRacers.com!
Reply:A heinekin 5 literhttp://www.core77.com/blog/images/he...eg-large-2.jpgis an aluminum can.  i think.
Reply:I put a magnet to the can on the screen and it didn't stick to your hinee The ones I had are thin mild steel or "tin"I would solder with a propane torch using lead free solder.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Hi David,Do you think the solder will hold the filler neck and a plate to screw in the drain fitting?  I know solder is pretty soft, maybe the lead free is not??What kid of clearances can I get away with when soldering this stuff? Thanks!Build a Barstool Racer at BarFlyRacers.com!
