My son has this job.  He is in his second year of vocational school and going for 2 more years of welding. The customer ground, primed and painted this trailer.  It was pretty rusty and the fenders had been patched before, so we got to build a new set.  1/8" diamond plate.I checked out the ones at the local tractor supply, but they were paper thin, so the customer ok'd the diamond plate. Here is the job.Cut with a plasma, 11" wideMeasuring for the new parts.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Theese are the plans we came up with.  A short 45* corner just for looks.Pieces are cut.  They will be welded tomorrow.  He asked me how we were going to weld them, I said its your choice.  He repsonded with out even thinking  "Pulsed spray".Angle iron will be trimming the outside.More pics tomorrow.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:My son is in the second year at trade school as well, Welding, Did not want him to do this in the beginning but now I will have to support him best I can. How do you feel about your son following in the trade?  That trailer is looking good, sure the fenders will be just as nice."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:We all have to get up and do something everyday. In the movie 2012, the Chinese government cane to the little town and who could read, write or WELD. In the movie millions of people die, but the guy who could weld got his family on the life ship.Your son will always find a job, Look at it this way Jesse James(Monster Garage) is married to a hot actress in Hollywood (Sandra Bullock). When asked how he got her he said"Because I can fix things"
Reply:That didn't work for me! LOL , how about the rest of you, got a hollywood actress at home, Oh yeah I almost forgot , they're all actresses and drama queens. Reply:He only works 3 hours a day.  We spent some time with the settings on the V350.  .030 wire, 92/8 pulsed spray from 100 to 500 inches per minute trying different heat settings.  The beads are a little tall with 300 ipm.  We are working on that.  It could be because we didn't grind the mill scale off.  Going to try that tomorrow.Pulsed Spray over headThe bead.  Thats MY BOY!We cut the inside for the fender today.  It gets trimmed on the outside with angle iron.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I'm a bit surprised at all the rust in the last pict David.  I would have thought with the fenders off completely someone would have taken the 2 or 3 minutes to hit that support with a grinder to knock off the rust..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:He did clean the rust off.  He would never have got a bead like that on rust.Right over the green line. The customer will clean and paint.DavidLast edited by David R; 02-15-2010 at 06:24 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:The job is done, here are the rest of the pics. This is the trailer lowered.   Its great for loading rollers or scissors lifts.Cleaning off for the last time.Angle for the outside.    The welds on the outside were ground and polished with a flap disk.I had a ball working with my son.  Total time 14 hours.  Customer was billed 4 hours plus a sheet of steel and length of angle. My son got the hang of pulsed spray.Life is good.David Last edited by David R; 02-22-2010 at 06:17 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:The equipment.  Different settings were used for different positions.  All .030 wire, 92/8 gas.  100 to 300 inches per minute.A good time was had by all.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:It great that your teaching your son real world skills while he is still young.Wish i had someone to teach me to weld when i was young.  Non of the family to blame, just nobody could weld or enjoyed it.Didnt start til i was 20, after i got sick of asking people to weld this or fix that. Then i discovered i welding wasnt easy, so i practiced about 12hrs or more every weekend for quite a while til i could weld with good results every time.
