The welder I'm trying to get running uses a shunt assembly to vary the amperage.  I understand that as it slides in and out the amperage changes, but how does the assembly do it?
Reply:As the shunt moves in and out it varies the magnectic coupling between the primary and the secondary of the transformer. If you need to know more, research how transformers work, magnectic flux, and transformer saturation current.
Reply:It basically interferes with the magnetic field between the primary and secondary windings, changing the number of turns on the secondary that get energized by the primaries magnetic field. I think some are basically just an iron rod that goes in and out of the transformer core
