Been looking at the different models and not sure the right one for my needs. I am a hobbyist/car restorer/farmer, and will mostly be using for light cutting. Biggest I will probably ever need to cut is 1 inch.. I saw the Victor Portable and the Victor Cutskill but having trouble figuring which one is right for my needs. Anybody have either or any recommendations? Thanks
Reply:Deere, I know its not a victor as you are asking about, but I would take a look at the Smith Aw1A handle, cutting head etc....I think they now call it the "Versa-Torch" kit. It makes an ideal size for welding sheet metal on cars, general repairs, and cutting easily 1" . I guess it depends what you are doing. I have always felt Victors larger then the "J" series were too clunky for autobody work, and since being made in mexico, china, and who knows where else, the quality just doesnt seem to be consistent anymore.
Reply:Go with the brand you can get parts for locally. I have a Smith and think it would be a great torch but can't get tips for it here. The new Victors I have used work just like the 40 year old one I use daily on my rig. I also have a Harris and it's a good torch (I actually prefer it to the Vic for O/A welding). I think you can get the same one at Lowes or Home Depot for 179 bucks or so with hose, goggles, striker, regulators, check valves and flashback suppressors and one cutting tip and one welding tip. I've cut a lot of 3/4 plate with the Harris (rubber seat in the Victor went south and it took me a while to find one as the LWS kept telling me it couldn't be had - finally called Victor and solved the problem) and it would handle the 1 inch easily. I wouldn't go with the small Victor (don't even know what they call it) if you plan on cutting one inch with it. The Cutskill is a full size torch and if I remember correctly the porta torch is the small one. Victor rates the porta torch for cutting up to half inch.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist. |
