This has about 50 hours on it.  It was new on a new machine two months ago.  They asked me if I could fix it, I said sure.  The auger was bent pretty good and hitting the back of the blower.  Cutting edge went some where a while ago.The square holes were for the cutting edge bolts.Last edited by David R; 02-22-2010 at 06:35 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:A little work with the arc air to cut off the old stuff.  Then straighten and add the new stuff.  Just a piece of 1/4" X 6" X 473/4".About 1/2" out of square here.  Other side was not as bad.Last edited by David R; 02-22-2010 at 06:36 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:I don't know what overcame me, but I welded it with stick.  I usually use pulsed spray, but......3/32 7018 out of the oven @ 85 amps for most of it and some 1/8" 7018 @ 130 or 140 amps depending on what I was doing.Clamping and welding the inside edge.  3/32 6013 DC- 65 amps.I need the cutting edge to locate the holes since this inside piece is stretched from being bent.  The skis and wear pads will be hardfaced to maybe get a few more hours out of it this time.  I can fix the machine, but not the operator.Pics of it finished as soon as the cutting edge shows up.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:I bet they go easier on it next time.My name's not Jim....
Reply:Some people just should not run equipment. At least it creates work for weldors.
Reply:Man I wish I could get that much peel from my 7018. I can get maybe half of that from 7014.
Reply:Their customer should have to pay new price for that and receive it in the condition you got it.That's what makes the rental rates go up and up. Reply:Rebuild looks good so far!I've got a 84" one here to do something with. It was "well used" when we bought it for the farm 10 years ago and it has a few new dents and bangs in it since. The metal around the second stage blower is worn right down to "paper thin" around most of the circumference. It has just started to break through in a couple of spots. I'm hoping it will last the winter, then we need to rebuild it.Andrew
Reply:i m guessin you chose 6013 where you did because  there is lighter metal there and the 6013 runs better at 65 amps than the 7018?
Reply:Yeah, that was a little munged up.  Looking good so far David. But the new bucket lip is 'out' past the skid shoes on the back of the bucket.  Will you have to extend the skid shoe vertical travel, or do you have to trim the lip back? Will you bolt-on or weld the cutting edge?  If bolt on, how are you going to cut the square holes?  The best laid schemes ... Reply:Dave, that frog worn down to the bolt holes reminds a few yrs ago when we lived in Idaho, I was out w/ the snowblower clearing the end of the drive after the city plows cleared the street. I looked down and there was a cutting edge bolt worn in half LENGTHWAYS!!. I put it in my pocket and later took it to the city shop. Asked the supervisor if this is what we paid taxes for. He tried to tell me it wasn't off one of theirs. I said the state plows sure as hell don't plow my street and I hadn't seen any private plows on it either. He just got real redfaced and walked off and I walked off shaking my head. I imagine the taxpayers got to pay for a whole new plow to replace that frog.                                              MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:The cutting edge came in Friday late so I finished it today.  Drill for bolt holes.  I had to cut off 5/8" of the 1/4" plate I put on the bottom.  I added a piece of 7/8" square stock I had on each front "ski".  Then I broke out a reel of Lincoln 55 I have had for years.  .045 cored wire for hardfacing.   I had no idea for settings or even polarity, so a quick run to the library to use their computer.  I went to lincoln and found DC+, 350 ipm, 28 volts 1 3/4" stick out.  It should be 125 amps, but my digital meter on the machine read 150 amps or so.I only had tips for .068 or 1/16" wire, so I had to make one out of a Tweeco .045 tip.  I cut the threaded end off, and re threaded it to 5/16 x 18.   It only took a few minutes.  I buy the tweeco tips for about  30 cents each, the Lincoln ones are a dollar or two.  ANYHOW, it got me out of a jam and worked for the whole job.The one on the left is original, the center one is like the one I started with and the one on the right is the final product. Reply:I Piled on the hardfacing rotating from one piece to the next to keep interpass temps cool.  I made a LOT of passes on each piece.  When I was done, the edge was just a little low.  It will wear in and should last a lot longer.  I probably put 1/2" of hardfacing on the front sides of the blower where I added the 7/8" square stock.  it looked pretty good except for some spatter that I could not dial out.  I trimmed it up with a 4.5" grinder. After a couple of passes.  Customer was happy.  Total time 8 hours plus one for the hard facing.David Last edited by David R; 03-01-2010 at 07:12 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Did you like the Hardsurface wire? I built up 400' of 24" auger about 10 years ago with it and I have neverdone it since, with wire. I too was using .045 wire, it was just time consuming and slow. I use Stoodyhardface rods in 1/8 and 5/32 for most buckets, blades, and cutter heads.Aeromax Service Truck w/ 6,000lb Crane to carry my toys.Miller Trailblazer 302'69 Lincoln SA-200A couple of Victor Jr's to make big pieces smaller..........
Reply:Was this snowblower installed on a rental power unit or was it installed on the customer's machine?
Reply:Pipeline, no I do not like hardfaceing.   This wire went on better than impact hard facing rod.RancherBill, the machine and snowblower were both new.  That is how I knew it had 50 hours on it.  The customer is going to see how the hardface works out.  Hopefully we will NOT know until next winter.  I have a new to me BMW R1100RT motorcycle sitting in the garage.  Snowblowers and plows make me money, but I'm ready for spring. Thanks for the compliments.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
