gday guys ive been asked to help out my neighbor on his car a vl commodore the police centre has said the speaker holes on the parcell shelf have to be welded up with a plate because someone has made the holes larger so its not standed ,its a structual part of the car .so my question is do you think it is better to stitch weld these up or do a full weld around, in stages of course. the holes are 6inches deep by 9 inches wide oval shape cheers glen
Reply:That is very thin metal so stitch it very slowly.I.B.E.W Electrician and Damn Proud of It !!!! .Virtus Junxit Mors Non Separabit http://www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org/
Reply:i just had a good look at it and it will need to be slowliy stitched up eventually filleng or the joining areas its not flat its all weid curves and the patch had to be shaped to fit it cheers im right now thanks
Reply:WOW you guys have regulations on speaker hole size?
Reply:nah its not the size... its that your not alowed to cut into the steel in the parcel tray on sedans as it is considered a structural part of the car. We have the same law in New Zealand.there are normally holes there for factory speakers and the best way to put 6x9's in is to use spacers.
Reply:forgive my ignorance but where's the parcel tray?
Reply:Stitch weld seems best for less distortion ...RR, the parcel tray is the shelf directly behind the top of the rear seat, under the rear window. That's the "correct" name for it. Usually, that's where people mount their rear speakers, either there or in the quarter panels on either side of the rear seat.

Reply:Is this car like the Monaro, with the gas tank right below the parcel shelf? Ha.Aussies can build a hell of a car with that Monaro (GTO), but they sure put the gas tank in the wrong spot if you're wanting some trunk room...The soldering toys pay for the welding toys.Hakko 928 dual iron, 4xHakko 936Madell 850D Hot Air SMT ReworkMiller 252, HTP Invertig 201 AC/DC, and a Hypertherm 45.

In 1890's women wore a "bonnet". A "boot" goes on your foot, and the flat horizontal surface behind the rear seat is the "rear deck". In most of the Detroit-built automobiles I have owned the rear deck was upholstered cardboard glued to a sheet of steel that resembled metal foil. Structural? hardly. Most of the strength in that area was in the formed sheet steel behind the rear glass and supporting the "trunk lid" hinges.Nomenclature 101. -Mondo

Reply:And all this time I thought the parcel tray was the shelf for the bobble head dog.

Reply:No, the hula girl goes on the dashboard next to the plastic Jesus ........ . o O (Boy are we getting way the hell off-topic or what? )
Reply:G'day matey, I would stitch weld it , but dont try to focus on one side at a time, tack it in there then devide it into quarters and move from one quarter to the next so that there's not a lot of distortion and the welds get to cool nicely between passes.. And make sure you take the carpet out of the parcel shelf as well as the boot, them sparks will go everywhere! Good luck!!
Reply:it is not leagal in canada either to cut the parcel tray but its not inforced.
Reply:What ever you call it it is a structural piece. Just go to show you how strong sheet metal is when you put a few breaks in it. When they made real cars the shelf was alread cut for 6x9's or 5x10' whether or not the car came with a stereo system or just an am radio with 1 speaker.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
