I inherited my late Fathers welder. I can remember he could weld just about anything with it. I bought a new Ford Ranger in 1983 and it didn't even come with a bumper. Dad made one in no time and it was stronger than ever.  (long winded newbie...)   anyhow it is a mid-states equipment corporation, metal zipper-et model # 100.  It has four inputs for the ground and the electrode holder. My question is which plug goes in which? On the tag it says High  1-3, 1-4  and low is 2-3,2-4. You can also do carbon soldering using 3-4. I need to learn more, but first wanted to make sure I hooked it up correctly. Would really like to use this old machine. It means a lot to me.  Thanks,Glen
Reply:From pics I googled it Looks to me like it is a tapped transformer. Probably AC only, so there will not be positive and negative. For thin metals (lower amps) use taps 2 and 4 and then on up the scale to 1 and 3 for the max amps.but could be wrong....it has happened before
Reply:does it matter which goes in which slot or plug in? The electrode holder is all bare metal. Just don't want to get shocked. Yes I do believe this to be just a 110v machine. Thanks for your fast response.
Reply:Detailed picts would help. especially the "electrode holder". I don't think I've seen a bare metal one in the past. I'm thinking you are looking at the ground clamp, but I may be wrong..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:That's an old one, alright. You might want to post a pic in the "oldest welder" thread. To use it, you put the ground cable in either #1 or #2, and the electrode cable in either #3 or #4. This will give you 4 different heat settings. Actually, it doesn't matter which is "ground" and which is electrode, since it's AC.Also note that it won't have much power even on the highest setting since it runs on 120V. Don't expect to use anything larger than a 3/32" rod.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:Thanks S-B I will give it a try.
