anything i need to know before i plow an arc through them. i have some 6061 i can test on, but the only 2024 is the part i need to weld. thanks in advancejames"Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it
Reply:Only thing I can think of is that 6061 is prone to hot shortness, and 2024 is not recommended to be welded. Good luck

Reply:The awnswer is NO.Bad idea. The reason is that 2024 is very brittle. It is used for aircraft skin.It is usually clad on the outside with pure aluminum for corrosion protection. Many times the word ALCLAD will be stamped on the back of the plate. For welding the 5000 series and up is good and some 3000 series. I would check the 3000 first with the supplier.. Aluminum weldments are only about 60% the strength of the parent metal. There were some tests being conducted to try to weld aircraft together so they could realize a tremendous weight savings without rivets, but I do not think the outcome was good, The American Welding Society would have those reports.I would have to check into that, but since i have not heard anything i suspect it was not good. The new US submarine hulls are titanium 4 inches thick, TIG welded in a single pass with powdered flux. I actually saw photos of the first test of a 12 foot section.Last edited by Donald Branscom; 07-29-2008 at 10:25 PM.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder |
