good deal? 150 bucksso far it appears to be in excellent condition, I am just trippin out on how thin the belt is,  the guy says it has the same belt on it ever since he's owned the drill press and he said he has had it for 20+ years, anyways.. I'm stoked  does anyone have this same press? I'd like to know if it's any good for metal working (the guy I bought it from used it for wood only) Attached Images"Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal"   -Henry Ford
Reply:I got an old Rockwell Delta a couple of years back for free. I love it, its got ALL the adjustments. Angle too. Pretty neat for free, the guy was gonna scrap it.If you don't have a drill press already, you'll be amazed how handy they can be.HH187Hobart 500i plasma cutterClark 4.5" GrinderDewalt 14" chop saw30 gallom 1.6 hp compressor10 gallon pressure pot sand blasterlots of hand tools
Reply:IF it's got double reduction and a big enough motor you might be alright. My name's not Jim....

Reply:This is the one I got on sale about 4yrs ago.  I put a good chuck on it and have been very satisfied.  It's a knock off of the Delta we had at work.http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=39955My name's not Jim....
Reply:The press has 2 pulleys at top, Motor pulley and spindle pulley. The spindle speed and torque is regulated by the configuration of the drive belt. Basically, if belt placement will allow spindle to run slow, 500rpm, and of course greater, it will work for metal. Drill presses designed for wood use only, runs at much higher rpms which will fry a metal bit quickly.Miller TrailBlazer 251Miller HF-250-1Miller MaxStar 150 STLHyperTherm PowerMax 380 plasmaLincoln PowerMig 180Millermatic 252Miller Diversion 180

Reply:Not bad. Used to be Craftsman tools were real work horses. Also Sears kept parts in stock for thing it seemed like forever. Unfortunately probably 3 or 4 years ago, (Posibly about the time sears and Kmart got together, I can't exactly remember) Sears went thru and dumped almost all thier old parts past a given date. Shame. I found out when I grabbed a sweet old cast iron tablesaw that needed one small part. The Sears Parts place near me had always had parts for old tools back well into the 60's. The counter guy who'd been there for years told me they'd trashed all the old parts the past year, when they closed up quite a few of their warehouse and distribution centers. The age might be a bit newer. I forget when the feds started to mandate those removable keys on tool switches, that little yellow dot on the switch in pict #1. My guess is sometime late 90's early 00's, as almost all my small bench tools that I started out with in the early 90's don't have them, and only one or two of the ones from mid 90's have the original same color pull out switches. After that I believe they mandated that the keys be clearly visible and most changed to yellow with a bigger profile. BTW don't F with that little pull out safety if you don't have to. I know a couple of guys who though  they always needed to pull them out and found 2 things. #1 that after a while the keys would fall out in use, then the switch just doesn't work. and #2 if you loose or misplace it the machine won't start at all. Reply:Funny the double reduction thing came up, I've tried to think of ways to slow mine down for drilling bigger than 1/2" (13mm) holes in steel, the cut speed is too fast beyond that. It'll make an interesting project someday.HH187Hobart 500i plasma cutterClark 4.5" GrinderDewalt 14" chop saw30 gallom 1.6 hp compressor10 gallon pressure pot sand blasterlots of hand tools
Reply:I put a 2hp treadmill motor and control on mine, turns real slow and really fast, all on the low speed pulley.

Reply:I've got that same one, just a few years different (different label on the front).  It'll do just fine for most things metalworking.  When adjusted right, it will stall the motor before the belt slips.Who is John Galt?
Reply:I put it on the fastest setting to see what it looked like.... 8500 rpm's scary fast I will never go that fast, I wish it would  spin slower though for big holes"Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal"   -Henry Ford
