What process are needed to weld cast 8620 to ASTM A500 Grade B structural tubing. I am looking for reasons comparing 1045 cast vs 8620 cast material.
Reply:Since I don't know those alloys off hand, I would look up the material chemistry, calculate the carbon equivalent (CE), and if it was above about 0.35 % I would consider preheat, postheat, and a low hydrogen process. 1045 is plain carbon steel with 0.45 % carbon so it is hardenable enough to have potential problems with heat affected zone brittleness and cracking, unless the weld is preheated and welded with low hydrogen techniques. I would also consider the application, is it something involving high stress, impact, vibration, life/death? |
