I built a black powder chest for my buddy over he weekend."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"

Reply:Nice job, but if he really is going to store black powder or some other propellant in there, you should add some vents.  Otherwise if there's a fire it could go boom.Tim

Reply:vent..definitely needed...put two 6" steel pipe stacks in top...make heavy vent drop doors much like the gravity caps on an exhaust stack..but heavier...fit rubber gaskets inside the caps..gravity keeps em in place and the powder dry...but won't become a pipe bomb in case of fire...a similar arrangement is used in the powder magazines on warships...whay kind on coaming did you put in side the door to keep it sealed?

Reply:I can't find my black power book right now. IIRC for a magazine they usually recomend either some sort of vent, or a large thin blast panel. The idea is that the thin panel will easily fail and relieve the pressure in the event of a fire. Most storage boxes I can find list wood as the prefered material for the walls as it will not contain pressures in the event of ignition..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Hello DSW, Yep he is going to make the vents. And also he is going to line it with the proper amount of oak. I know one thing, he happened to shrink my pile of oak lagging! In the end it will meet all state, local and fed regs. He is very up on that because he has his high explosive license. I am in the process of getting mine, and might work with him when he shoots structures. The chest is going to be buried in the side of a berm, thats why the face has so much overhang. I think he will be able to easily store 1000 lbs of black powder in this chest, he is a dealer. I don't remember all the specs, he just brought me all the steel sheared to size and said "weld it". If I can I will get pics when he is done."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:I'm not sure I can see the vent in the photo, but if it's only 2X5, it might be too small for 1000 pounds of black powder, especially if the chest is buried and only the door side is exposed.  I think DSW has the right idea with the blast panel.  Maybe make the door hinges weak (undo the fine attachment already there) so that if it does blow, the door will come off.  Weld a piece or two of chain between the door and the chest front so the door itself doesn't go flying off and kill somebody a block away.Tim

Reply:Cool....  I am 'un-schooled' in the 'Blowing things up' department when it comes to 'Black Powder'...'What and Why' is Black Powder used to blow stuff up ?Cheers,/J...Miller Diversion 165120 amp Buzz BoxVictor Oxy/Ace Oxy/LPGSmith "Little" Oxy/LPGHypertherm Powermax 30Lot's of Misc. tools n' crap....
Reply:In simple terms...When Black Powder burns and is contained, it generates larges volumes of gas and that generates pressure... so BOOMWalt
Reply:Black power is seldom used to "blow thing up" any more. It's usually used as a propellant for "primitive" black power fire arms, to go "bang" with canons for reenactments of the Civil War and Revolutionary war, and in making fire works.Today they usually use "high explosives", dynamite, ANFO, blasting gelatin, and a wide variety of specialized explosives for cutting, heaving and shearing, for mining and demolition..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I think there are specific laws for storing black powder. My buddy makes his own and has special "Magazines" burried in a hillside. I even read where 1" wood must be used because you don't want a pressureized storage box if it lights off. Black powder gets stronger under pressure and will just fizzle out if no pressure unlike smokeless powder which will always go boom. Reply:We are in the middle of separating a s.s. box into 2 separating units because of new fed regulations.  They are lined with what looks like sheet rock and then a piece of plywood.  I dont know if powder falls into the same category as the caps and primers.  But there is no vent holes or blow out plates on these units.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:Yeah, here they use a lot of Blasting Caps and Putty for exposives.... I don't think I've ever seen Black Powder here except for Gun and Cannon use.I was curious about that, as I remember a guy that we went to School with who would make 1/4 sticks of Dynamite (would that be normal gunpowder ?) and took Extreme Delight in blowing up Dumpsters and throwing water-repellant sticks into the Rivers.  Watching those blow up under water was pretty wild !Cheers,/J...Miller Diversion 165120 amp Buzz BoxVictor Oxy/Ace Oxy/LPGSmith "Little" Oxy/LPGHypertherm Powermax 30Lot's of Misc. tools n' crap....
Reply:The black powder is for use in guns. In IL the only way you can hunt with a rifle is a muzzleloader. Also at our gun club, they shoot cowboy tournaments using revolvers with black powder cartridges. There will be more vents in that magazine. I think he said the regs called for 12" of venting. Also the reason for not having a weak link like the door, is not in case it blows. If you have 1000 lbs of powder go, it will take alot more than a regulation steel chest to hold it. It has to be the correct combination of thickness of steel and lined with the proper amount of wood. The thicker the steel, the less the wood inside and vise versa. The actual reason is because they do not want anyone to be able to shoot thru it. All vents have to have deflectors so a bullet can't be shot in any of them. And they even dictate the size and I even think the brand of padlock. I think my buddy said American was the only approved padlock for high explosives, i think. Anyways, I keep getting bits and pieces of info as you guys ask, so forgive me if I make a mistake."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:"The actual reason is because they do not want anyone to be able to shoot thru it."Oh, now that's just silly.  Charles Darwin himself would tell you there's no good reason whatsoever to try to prevent someone from shooting into a large chest full of black powder.Tim
Reply:I'm pretty sure someone shooting from 100 yards away would be plenty safe.
